Economics Thread

It's simple tit for tat. JD Vance was the one on the campaign trail talking about eggs while MAGA was freaking out online. Once trump went into office every MAGA became an expert on Bird Flu and the supply chain.

But tit for tat isn’t working. One thing Dems need to realize quickly is if you just alienate Trump’s base with the same obvious bull**** that JD Vance did, you’re not offering a different path. In terms of the economy as a whole, eggs are an outlier that are not making a difference on any American who isn’t dependent upon eggs for their livelihoods. There are not enough Dems that seem to understand this yet and it’s been months since the election should have woken them up. I’m keeping my eye on Jake Auchincloss who seems to at least understand that we need to win elections by having an actual message to voters beyond “haha, you Trump-voting ****er.”

Maybe a platform of “everyone’s racist but us, but we make your life worse when you elect us “ isn’t working ?

It is a bold strategy, but one that most wake up from eventually

Only plays so many times to the informed

The only concept/metric that defines a successful country is a strong middle class - Everything else is just noise.

The Lords once asked the King of England to intervene to prevent wages of serfs from rising after the Black Death. Alas the laws of supply and demand were too powerful.

One bad policy decision inevitably leads to another to compensate for the damage, and that’s already true of President Trump’s new 25% tariffs on auto imports. The Journal’s news pages reported late Thursday that Mr. Trump threatened auto executives on a call this month not to raise prices if he went ahead with his tariffs.

At least he recognizes in private that his tariffs aren’t cost-free for business or consumers, which wasn’t previously clear. But like his Democratic predecessors, he apparently thinks he can browbeat CEOs to cover up for them.

...

During last year’s campaign, Kamala Harris proposed letting the Federal Trade Commission dun food companies that raise prices too much. Mr. Trump responded by noting that “after causing catastrophic inflation, Comrade Kamala announced that she wants to institute socialist price controls.”

Well, now Mr. Trump seems to be imitating Comrade Kamala to prevent catastrophic price increases from his auto tariffs.

Considering pulling the trigger on a car purchase this weekend, even though I wanted to wait til end of year.

Probably won't due to the rushed decision... but so ****ing stupid to have put this in my calculus

I'm shocked I'm not getting calls from the dealership I got my car from. They're usually up on any major change. THey don't know I'm planning on going 2 more years unless another 0% APR comes back.

I mean, if they can’t raise their prices they might not be super motivated to sell you a car right now.

I would guess a fair number of people will accelerate certain purchases. Probably has already been happening.
