You've been pretty adamant you don't like tariffs, so if this all results in less tariffs, shouldn't you be happy?
Can’t speak for C2C, but as someone who doesn’t like tariffs, still no. These are negotiations that could have happened without taking a sledge hammer to the entire economy, and because Trump and the House have decided he can just fucking do this whenever he wants without oversight, it’s going to loom for the rest of his term. It’s also worth noting the barriers the current tariffs of other countries present to the American economy are less extreme than trade hawks have suggested. This shift from leveling the playing field on tariffs to doing so on trade deficits is extremely troubling because it suggests Trump thinks we need to produce and sell things we just *can’t* because our cost of production is too high relative to the rest of the world. If we want neutral trade balances with the globe to be free of protectionist bullshit, we’ll remain in this cycle forever.

that would be a good outcome that was obtained by losing trust with our trading partners and allies and creating an environment where consumers and investors alike are going to be afraid to make financial decisions because the US might change their mind the next day.

You can decide for yourself if that was worth Germans and Japanese consumers paying a lower price on US goods

There’s also the not insignificant distinction that Trump doesn’t have the constitutional authority to levy tariffs. Declaring a fake emergency to do this unilaterally is an impeachable offense (much like I said about Biden’s student loan forgiveness pay for votes scheme).

Reminder that more than 90% of the tariff revenues generated in Trump's first term was used up providing compensation to farmers hurt by the tariffs wars.

I don’t know how to break this country of this behavior either, because both sides benefit too greatly from skirting the rules. Credit to Trump, potentially breaking things so very badly that Republicans have to act to avoid a Democratic Supermajority in ‘26 might be as close to a valid political incentive as we’re ever going to get.

Fuck man, if we’re just going to tax Americans on everything they buy and use that money to subsidize production, we’d might as well just go the rest of the way and do socialism. At least the other countries that do this give their citizens health care and stuff.

The obvious outcome here is that all of the richest companies will *shrewdly* shift production to the country of Trump’s choosing (chosen due to best deals provided to those same *shrewd* companies) and import costs will ease for these companies. However, small businesses and key competitors to the *shrewd* companies, can absolutely go fuck themselves and pay the massive tariffs. Then those *shrewd* companies will bake in the increased market price for their goods gradually and prices will still go up dramatically.

If the goal is to improve our access to foreign markets, how is it not possible to just do this and keep the other dumbass tariffs in place? Why must these “reciprocal” tariffs apply to any situation where an American company would not be tariffed? How is that legal under the guise of the EO?

Get ready for the incredibly crafted Russian cars.

Well that's not actually factual, but it's partially true.

But Tesla is one of the companies that builds engines here so they'll rank higher.

I think this idea that cars are like PCs being build overseas shipped here and assembled has mostly been proven a myth. But you need a healthy chunk of products from all over the world. Which is fine and how things should be. I'd want my car company to use the best products and not skimp on the battery because we need parts from America.
