A lot of things go into life expectancy. Education for example. Income for another. The reason so many red states are so poor and have poor indicia on measures like life expectancy is poor policy. Poor educational policy. Poor social policy in the form of segregation and other efforts to deny blacks their rights. Some of it isn't government policy. Whites in the south are simply more racist, which contributes to certain pathologies independent of government policy. Apologies for the generalization. Profiling is a bitch.

The blue states aint perfect. They have their own problems. But on a lot of basics the red states fail their people.

Over the course of my life I've lived for extended periods in Florida, Ohio, Massachusetts, New Jersey, California and now New York. I've travelled a lot all over the country and around the world. The last few years my job has required annual trips to Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, Oklahoma and Florida. No place has a monopoly on good policy or virtue. But places like Mississippi, Oklahoma and Alabama are the ones that would benefit the most from taking a look at how the rest of the country does things.

Thank you for mansplaining life expectancy factors that we are all well aware of, but I ask again.... how is managing suicide rates more of a government responsibility than having the lights (and hell water for that matter) on when you need it? Things that would seem to contribute to high suicide rates would seem to be the lack of air conditioning and refrigeration IMO ( kidding).

You can live independent of the government for all of those things if you have the means, except power and water. (save for putting in a full time generator which isn't a REAL solution at all).

Further, I don't doubt you believe southerners stand no 1 on the podium for racism, but I'm seeing more and more blatant racist action up in the North. We have been living side by side in more integrated communities for likely longer than the Northern (not NE) states and its a constant with most cities down south (like mine) having a majority of AA citizens.

Hell, most Midwestern and Southwestern states still treat Native Americans terribly. They more than anyone still face systematic racism more than any other group. So forgive me for doubting we take the full cake here. Or are we just talking about African Americans when we say race?

I'll give the mansplaining another try. There are things like suicide prevention hotlines. Don't know if they have worked their way to all the red states. Other mental health resources are provided by government. A few years ago there was a lot of attention paid to so-called "deaths of despair." This was (and continues to be) a phenomenon affecting white working class people. It encompassed suicide, alcohol abuse and prescription drug addiction. It actually has caused life expectancy to decline for that demographic group. Now there is an element of individual responsibility when it comes to suicide, and alcohol and drug abuse. But it is generally considered to also be an area for public policy to operate. I'll leave it at that. Don't want to overdo the mansplaining.

There are also private groups as well that do this too! Crazy!

But the operation of a hotline (a phone number with a person on the other end) > electricity for the city?

There is racism everywhere. I've told the story here of my liberal Berkeley friend taking her daughter out of an elementary school because she thought there were too many minorities. However, I stand by my observation about the average level of racism of whites in the south compared to whites in other places.

And yes, I think progress is being made in the South. I parachuted into 5th grade in Florida as a 10-year old immigrant. The school I went to was just starting to integrate. At that age I didn't understand what was going on. When I reflect back on that time, I am always astounded at the treatment of the four black kids in my class. I'm pretty sure things are different now.

Avert your gaze. Having to unplug your appliances and turn off you air conditioner in 110 degree heat is a great sacrifice for the green new deal.

California was once great. It is a complete disaster today

Look. California is a great place. But it does have poor government policy in many ways. Being a citizen of the People's Republic of Berkeley for several years made that very clear. But please note that some of the stress on the electrical grid is due to the wildfires. The area I live here in New York saw widespread loss of electricity, which took days to restore, when the remnants of a hurricane swept through last month. My mother still lives in California. I owe her a call. Things were not so bad when I talked with her last week. The only thing she mentioned was skipping her walk once or twice due to air quality. But air quality had improved last week. She has not once mentioned being worried about electricity. My son is also back in California now (for some strange reason he was eager to get back there after two years in Georgia). I will check in on him and give y'all an update.

very poorly chosen one has gotten a lot of mileage by posing as a economic nationalist/populist

they say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery...and it looks like credibly accused creepy joe is going to steal a page from that playbook

he is rolling out an economic plan that features a 10% tax on imported manufactured goods and a tax credit for companies that move their production back home

imo this might be good politics but good economics it aint (though I would favor something more targeted for items that we do not want to rely on foreign factories for)

i imagine this kind of plan will be right in the economic nationalist wheelhouse of people like Bannon...credibly accused creepy joe obviously angling for the Bannonite vote...i think it will play well in places like PA and MI

additional thought...the Democratic Party has always been the natural home for those kinds of economic nationalist/populist/mercantilist policies...the GOP countered (effectively) with the protectionist card as well as pointing out the benefits to average consumers from free trade...can they still make that argument after 4 years of very poorly chosen one (he of the very poorly chosen tariffs) in the Oval Office...it's gonna be difficult for them to make the case

if elected i'm guessing that credibly accused creepy joe will actually implement much of this agenda that very poorly chosen one ran on but for the most part only pretended to implement

Funny, back in the 1960's, when the rich were paying their "fair share" in taxes, revenue as a % of GDP was no higher than it is today. It's almost as if government spending might be the bigger problem. Unfortunately neither of our two major parties even pretend to care about government spending anymore.
