Economics Thread

Romney's plan is worth engaging in a serious discussion about but given your posting history hard pass

hopefully some others will want to have a real discussion

I started this thread.

But yeah being called a white supremacist enough times makes me less willing to engage friendly with the folks who want to rob and steal from the future generations

Beginning the phase out at $100k per couple seems a bit low to me if that couple has kids, but $300k is crazy high. I didn't realize the cap was that high.

The cap has been at 150K for joint filers with a phaseout that was pretty gradual so that some people with incomes as high as 300K were getting some of the stimulus funds. I think what is being looked at now is a cap of $100K, with a quicker phaseout to $150K. Since this is based adjusted gross income, I believe you are right that large families are a bit unfairly treated. Otoh, those below the cap are getting some nice payments per child.

Yeah, but honestly I think more than ever after 2020 you have an idea who needs the funds. If you made 100K in 2019 but 80K in 2020 it's clear you've experienced some let down. I know in 2020 I did OK by my standards, but I lost a chunk of change if it wasn't for the stimulus packages I would have been down about 10K and that was with a healthy work schedule where I lost some work time but not that much.

I still think it’s crazy that the federal government might just toss me $5,600 when I’ve not been adversely affected in any way. I’m not giving it back or anything, but this really seems impractical.

We have friends that felt the same last year.
They donated to local homeless shelters.
Me and mine were talking about it this morning

Yeah, I'm standing to get a big check when I've actually benefited as I'm saving a couple thousand in gas and car maintenance a year now working from home. That's why instead of stuffing it into savings or investing, we've gone out and spent it at local businesses. It's an attempt to stimulate the economy, the best way I can think of to stimulate the economy is to pour the money into the economy. Help keep them open and keep people employed.

I don't think anyone close to 300k was getting Trump bucks, but I could be wrong. The cutoff was much lower as i recall.

The full phaseout for the first stimulus was at 198K for joint filers and 174K for the second stimulus. Households at or below 150K got the full amount in both cases, but the phaseout was faster for the second round.
