Extension Talks With Swanson Reportedly Underway

All-Star shortstop Dansby Swanson wants to be with the Atlanta Braves for the long haul.

The 28-year-old is scheduled to hit free agency at the end of the season but told The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal he is discussing a new contract with the Braves.

"The easiest way I can say it is, from the conversations we've had, they want me here, and this is my home - I want to be here," Swanson said.

Dansby just confirmed that extension talks are happening and that both sides want a deal and he wants to be here bc this is home. No way this deal doesn’t get done

Wow

Imagine if AA gets him for less than 20 per?

Dansby will make so much endorsement money being the face of the franchise and the guy that stayed through a championship run.

Although he's optimistic about remaining with the club he helped to a World Series title last season, Swanson understands things don't always go according to plan.

"One would think (that would lead to a deal), right? But we've seen crazy things happen before," he said. "I've really gotten to a point of just surrendering that over. This is my home. But wherever the good Lord is going to put me is where I'm supposed to be. I've come to terms with that."

I’ll preface this by saying Dansby should do best for him and I have no issue with anyone trying to maximize their pay.

But I cantI roll my eyes enough with him essentially saying it’s up to the Lord to decide where he goes next. If he decides to leave, it’s because he wanted more money not because the Lord chose for him.

Yup - Lame

Sounds like an exact quote that Freeman made lol

I think the biggest difference (besides the money) is that negotiations are starting in the season instead of after it

If it were gonna get done it would never have gone public.

Riley came out of nowhere.
Harris' got leaked then announced officially an hour later.

Not a fan of Dansby already using the Lord as his excuse. But then again he knows what demographic he's speaking to.

A lot of times yeah but with AA and Casey Close this won’t happen again. If it did then Close would have to fold up shop. It’ll get done no doubt.

I guess maybe… I did not take that article near as positively as you. Especially the parts you left out

My uneducated guess is that Close leaked this to put pressure on the Braves to not repeat the Freeman saga.

He does not seem to have learned anything about AA from the Freeman experience.

What do people think he is? His second half wrc+ isn't great.

I think he's closer to a league average hitter than the highs of 15% or 20% above avg he's had. Defense is very good.

We've been over that the obvious other options are very expensive.

5/100 is what I would be targeting. Still has him off the books before he's 35. Maybe add on some team options at 25 or 30 million. I assume he's looking at 6/150.

5/100 still makes the most sense with team option for 6th. Grissom at SS and Conforto or equivalent player in LF for the same 20 ish MM per year maybe better than Dansby at SS and Grissom in Lf.

My worry with Dansby is that I'm not sold on CF, LF, SS or DH as impact bats. I get not everyone can have impact guys at all spots.

IF Dansby is the SS we've locked down most of our spots. The only thing that is open is C (some platoon w/ wild bill), LF and DH. I LOVE Grissom, I have been talking him up all year in the minors thread. I think he hits. Does he hit with enough power to be an impact bat? Does he have enough power to play DH or LF? Can he play LF, he should be able to but he's been an infielder.

I like that option a lot....It's just we don't know how good Conforto is coming off this injury. And I'm not sure how bad Grissom is at SS.

The most detail I've seen is concern over his throwing accuracy and an average SS arm. NOt sure all of the concerns. He does not look like the natural defender we've seen most of Dansby, Simmons, Furcal. But he doesn't look bad to me.

Until proven wrong, I'm going to assume Dansby is gone. I think that was probably decided when he stuck with the agent after the Freeman fallout. It's not that the agent isn't doing his job, it is just the agent doesn't apparently mesh well with AA. AA likes to handle negotiations a certain way and this agent doesn't seem to care what AA prefers, he wants AA to dance to his tune. We've seen multiple extensions get done in the last week, but not this one. Not one of those others was made public, but this one is now being made public. They just aren't a good fit apparently.

Separate from personality, Swanson's value is largely in his defense. Do you believe in his defense through age 34? If you look at the greatest SS since 2000, most of them are either off SS, or have zero stick, beyond 30 or 31. So even at 5/100 you are probably facing 2+ season at $20M per year for Dansby where he is playing SS without a legit bat. His leadership and marketing appeal could make those two years tolerable, but much beyond 5/100 doesn't make much sense as I see it.

Adios then.

Sign Aldemys Diaz for 2 years/$16 million plus an option for a third, move Grissom to LF, let Rosario and Ozuna platoon at DH if you can't do anything with Ozuna.

Sign Rodon for 3 years/$90 million. Go to a 6-man rotation with Strider moving to the pen.

Acuna, Harris, Riley, Olson, d'Arnaud/Contreras, Ozzie, Grissom, Rosario/Ozuna, Diaz

Fried, Morton, Rodon, Wright, Soroka, Anderson/Muller/Elder/Shuster/Tarnok

Iglesias, Minter, Strider. Lee, McHugh, Matzek, Yates

Strider can be an elite starter. Why move him To the pen? Top of rotation starter is the rarest asset in the game.
