Extent Ender

Expects Yuge Games
The case for extenting Ender rests only in part on the player that Ender is. It also rests upon the fact that extensions given out to players at this point in their careers have generally worked very well for clubs. The Braves themselves have had very good results with such extensions. Much better than signing free agents. Extenting players like Ender in fact reduces the need for free agent signings by giving the club an extra year or two of contractual control, often at a below market rate. Players accept this as part of a trade-off. They receive security and peace of mind, and in return allow the club to buy a year or more of their free agency years at a good price.

The particulars of Ender's case are that he will be a Super Two this off-season. Without an extension we would still have him for the 2017-2020 seasons, his age 26-29 seasons. His baseline is that of a 3 WAR player. The arbitration process tends to be less generous with players like Ender whose value is tied up to a significant degree to his defense. My guess is if he went through arbitration, he would make something along the line of 2, 4, 6 and 8M over the next four years. I'd offer him something slightly less: say 2, 3.5, 5, 7 for those four years, plus 10M per year for his ages 30 and 31 seasons.

And as I just posted, he's up to .296/.339/.361 vs lefties this year, so I wouldn't say he can't hit them. He's a pretty good player.

Is it that hard to replace a light hitting defender in cf? He has no power and should prob hit 8 on a good team.

We have guys like acuna. Mallex is a cheap option.

If he had a bad leg injury would he be able to do much?

I'd play him while he's cheap and replace him.

Or you could sign him to a 6/38 contract and make the years more even. Telling someone they're going from 500K to $6M next year is a good way to get them to sign. It also makes their last 2 years easier to trade if it's 2/13 as opposed to 2/20 should you decide to go that route.

The way I look at it, we are making a deal for his age 30 and 31 seasons. If that allows us down the line to avoid signing a 32-year old free agent to a five year deal, that's a big plus.

The other thing is it potentially enhances our trading position down the road. Let's say both Mallex and Ender play very well next year. Trading Ender on that kind of contract will net a bigger return than trading him with three arb years left.

There is some downside risk as you noted. But the results for these kinds of deals when looked at collectively have been very positive for the clubs.

I can see both sides. But, Ender might be the type of guy you just ride out on the arbitration years and thank him for his service. Solid player either way, but there is too much risk, IMO, to signing him long term at this point.

I saw that the other day. His average was like .285 and someone else said he couldn't hit lefties. It's just wrong at this point.

a 3-5 WAR player is one you ride out and let go? Interesting.

I like Ender, but I'm not sure who you keep over he and Mallex. I think the decision will come down to their value with whomever we're negotiating with in the offseason.

Extenting Ender makes sense whether you plan to keep him or think down the line you go with Mallex and trade Ender. I do think we'll trade one of them eventually, but not this off-season. There is nothing wrong with having Mallex start out 2017 as our fourth outfielder. With injuries and everything else, he will get plenty of at bats.

Ah the thought of that with Kemp and Markakis starting makes me cringe.

If kemp is in the plans next season, mallex will have a big role as spot starter and defensive replacement for kemp

I really like watching Ender play.

He's no Andruw out there but he plays the position so heads up like Tron did at short. He has stolen so many outs this year with his defense. He's also now starting to hit well. Mallex might bring in more value though than Ender. One is gone unless we can flip Neck.

Unless this is a Dyson-Cain situation. Where Dyson was coming in as a late defensive replacement pinch runner
