Falcons: What Next?

Spending for the sake of spending isn't a wise option. He was dealt the Sanchez extension... Talk about stupid.

The Jets had 30+ mil in cap room.

Last offseason there were TONS of good CB's available. Rex needs good cover CB's to fit the defense he needs with all his exotic blitz packages.

Revis, Vontae, Talib, Verner, Flowers, many others, they never made a push for any of them.

Hell, even some in the draft were available when they picked and didnt pick them. Roby, Verrett and Dennard all there i believe.

Rex isnt perfect but Izdik was a horrible GM.

Falcons need to build up both lines, thats where games are won.

Their pass rush is abysmal.

OL isnt much better.

Head Coach wise, i dont know, probably a defensive coach, Rex or Bowles would be good. Rex gets a bad rap, hes a good coach and as others stated, players will run through a wall for him.

I'm fine with Rex as a head coach. I'm far more concerned that Dmitroff was not replaced. Can't say I have a ton of confidence in him being able to bolster an abysmal defense. If he gave Rex the players, I think the team could get back to being competitive quickly.

They have some cap room according to OTC and SJax is probably cut.

Although some of that will be to keeping internal guys like Bryant, Bierman, Spoon and Peters.

They can also restructure guys like Blalock.

Falcons have plenty of money to upgrade. They have a really healthy cap situation moving forward.

Need to resign Julio though. That's gott be a priority. It's gonna be a mess going year to year franchising him if it comes to that.

Yeah, Julio is priority 1, then everything else from there.

Looking at the Falcons for next year, Blalock is a good lock to be restructured, Baker is at potential to be cut, I don't think that he will because it's still a loss (7.3M cap hit vs. 9.2M in dead money) Harry is prime trade bait, Willy Moore may be restructured as well. Falcons are already like 25M under projected cap.

Resign Julio first, then go from there. I would go hard after JPP or Suh whoever the Giants don't sign. Falcons need a massively revamped DL.

baker stays one more year because the way that I understand his "big extension" was really only a 3 year 18 million deal. I think they can cut hm the next year without much if any dead money.

Suh would be the best possible player to add to our team. He makes all of our pass rushers better plus whoever we pick with our first rounder.

Suh or JPP would be great. JPP is overrated so he'll be overpaid but he's a great player. I mean there's a bunch of other guys we could target. Or Greg Hardy. I'd hope we make one big splash this year rather than last year when we made several small splashes. Also would love Greg Hardy as more of a "risk" signing as he didn't play like at all last year cause of his suspension, but as far as talent, he's one of like the 5 best DEs in the NFL and we could perhaps snag him for cheap.

6M in dead money, but 8M in cap hit. So they save 2M if he doesn't play like he has the last 2 years then he'll be cut. If he plays they may keep him around as he's a pretty good player when he's on the field. It's that last part that is tricky.

I think he gets restructured at the least. Somewhere short of 30 mill to spend is where we will land.

God say no to Josh McDaniels. Great offensive mind, but his coachign tenure in Denver was horrific.

He's not my top choice, but I think the Denver thing is forgivable. That was a really weird situation and he had some things happen there that were out of his control.

His biggest sin was how awful the Cutler for Cassel trade blew up and trading up for Tebow. Both were bad on his part, but he wouldn't have the same personnel power here, so I think that risk is mitigated.

Multiple league sources tell CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora that Patriots OC Josh McDaniels' candidacy for the Falcons' head-coaching vacancy is being "championed" by GM Thomas Dimitroff and top assistant Scott Pioli.
Both Dimitroff and Pioli worked with McDaniels in New England. La Canfora suggests Dimitroff and Pioli's futures could be tied to whether or not McDaniels is hired. Rex Ryan is believed to rank high on owner Arthur Blank's candidates list, but obviously has no ties to Dimitroff or Pioli. If Blank opts for Ryan over McDaniels, it could create tension in Atlanta's front office.
