Fangraphs Braves Prospect Rankings

that's a really upbeat write up on Waters.

Anderson's stuff gets no less confusing:

Anderson is tracking like a mid-rotation starter, even though he hasn’t added velocity since high school, because his secondary stuff is excellent. The pitch with the most obvious beauty is his shapely curveball, which has enough depth (despite its paltry spin rate) to miss bats in the zone, and also pairs well with his fastball’s approach angle. His change has tail and fade, and either it or the curve can finish hitters.

damn, pretty glowing review of Shewmake, who apparently has no position despite getting plus grades across the board as a SS
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

i, too, was surprised at the Waters write-up. if he hit that many balls that hard, then damn. great sign.

Maybe there is something to those high BABIP numbers Waters keeps posting. Good chance he grows into more power.

So, either Anderson has a poor curveball with poor spin rates, a good curveball and the spin rate stuff is nonsense or a good curveball with poor spin rates.

Sell high on Anderson. Footage I've seen of him is him overpowering minor leaguers... probably wouldn' get away with that at hte big league level

there isn't that much you can tell from footage.

Sure. Command and do minor leaguers punish him or not on mistake pitches and pitches he didn't place where he wanted. Throwing 94 up in hte zone and getting a swing and a miss in Mississippi is not the same as throwing the same pitch in the big leagues and getting a homer in the stands.

ok bud

I study film and coach some professional athletes for a living. lol.

Granted, it is only a few starts I've seen from him on TV, and footage of him online, but what I've seen is him getting away with mistake pitches against weak hitters in the minors. Add in his spin rates are not very good and that's not a recipe for success.

I've softened on Shewmake a bit. He has a great hit tool and excellent defensive versatility. I think there's a good chance he ends up being a guy that sees close to a starter level number of ABs without ever really having a permanent home on the diamond. Those kind of guys have excellent value in today's game. The more I've thought about the value of elite super-utility types, the more I've come to be okay with Shewmake.

I still don't see him sticking as a full time starter at short. He's 6-4 and 190. If he stays that wiry, he could stick there. But how nimble will he be if he puts on 30 pounds? His frame could easily carry 220 or even 230. It's just very difficult to be a fulltime SS at that size.

I think Shewmake adds more bulk and outgrows being a fulltime SS. Instead, I see him getting 500+ ABs a year being shoehorned in wherever he's needed. With him you could probably platoon guys who play different positions. Imagine platooning a right handed hitting second baseman and a lefthanded left fielder with Shewmake playing left against lefties and second against righthanders.

What's the deal with Waters' personality?

I really can't stand throwaway statements like that (especially when they are not backed up with specific instances giving rise to any such concern). I do give greater credence to this as Kiley was in our org and knows our system better than most, but still...

In Waters' case, his initial pre-draft scouting reports said he was "hard nosed" and "ultra competitive" but I don't see those as bad things, necessarily, unless you're a purist proponent of the "Braves Way". Other than that, and perhaps the kerfuffle over the draft/car, I have never heard of anything else negative about his personality.

First, I kind of want to know how TURBO was pronouncing Pache.

Second, nothing jumped out at me in that interview. He just seemed like a normal kid who isn't really great on camera (yet?).
