I didn't say we are. I didn't mention 2016.
I think it's clear we're going to try to be good next year, which is fine in principal but will probably cost too much given where we are.
Given the current major league pieces and state of the farm system, I'd rather focus on 2018 and beyond than 2016 and 2017. Under that lens, you can probably see why I don't value Olivera much.
I feel like we know less of Olivera than we do a minor league prospect. So, why go for a guy with a handful of years left (with the risk of unknown) and be on the hook for 30 million vs. a decent minor league prospect at league minimum? This isn't what rebuilding teams do.
We are now down to 1 starter we can really be confident in. The others are either young and still growing or struggling like Teheran.
Because we gave up two good future pieces for a broken 30-year-old.
I said we're still trying to build long-term, but just as I liked the Kimbrel move because it sacrificed current value for future, I dislike this even more because it sacrifices long-term value for current.
I was ok with dealing Wood and Peraza, but I wanted similar long-term value at different positions for them, not current value.

Olivera is good and all, but I am stunned there's not more to it.

2016 is almost "now." It will be "now" very soon. This move was made with possibly competing next year in mind, IMO. We will have money. We'll see.

And as I've said, I'd rather us not do that at the expense of any future value.

I've read the scouting reports, seen the videos, and seen his numbers.
McDaniel gave him a 50 FV and projected him for .260-.280 with 15-20 HR, and that lines up with his Cuban numbers. Which would be fine but still less than the value of Wood and Peraza. And that's his perceived upside. His downside is a guy who's never really healthy, needs TJ, and struggles with MLB pitching while declining in athleticism.

I think a few are underrating how highly LA thought of Bird. There is something there his numbers to date aren't showing. I think he could be a real find in this thing.
On a side note, addition by subtraction with Avilan. If Paco, Withrow, Winkler, Simmons, Viz, and a few others step up next year, GAH dang what a pen.
