FG article on Freeman's struggles

Because Freeman doesn't seem concerned about who's willing to offer top dollar. He openly wants to remain with the Braves. He appears to be the rare type of player who's more concerned about him and his family being comfortable and happy, than just going to any random city who's willing to pay top dollar.

Probably true. But Enscheff suggestion makes sense.

Agent has already been shopping. He knows he has 160 million as his floor.

Freeman may we willing to take 150 million from the Braves, but he's not taking 125.

All of this is a guess, but it makes sense.

Plus, this is the issue with waiting until the last year to do a deal anyway. He's so close to free agency he might as well see what his options are.

Who knows what would have happened if we had a normal season last year. Maybe the deal is done.

Right now we are coming off a COVID year and staring the current year where the All Star game and the playoff revenues may not be coming. The next year is almost guaranteed to be a labor stoppage and a shortened season.

Angels dont really need Freddie that badly. However, Padres, Dodgers and Giants could all use him as either a DH or 1B.
Goes without saying that Braves could possibly have a real need for FF in either role. I just think Liberty has some restrictive plans in play. Or maybe it is just AA counting on lots of money next off season to build around a really young rotation.

I’m off the mind that Mauer should be in the Hall.

It is kind of odd. Most guys move off the catcher position because the wear and tear is wearing them out offensively. For whatever reason, Mauer's offense got worse once he moved to first base.

He was a great pure hitter, but for a big guy, he just never could seem to generate that much power. Tremendous athlete who was a really good defensive catcher early in his career. > 50 in both bWAR and fWAR.

If Freeman is willing to take premium money for 2-3 years, or less than premium money for 4-5 years, sign him.

If the Angels are looking to replace Pujols with Freeman on a mega deal, there's no way AA should even come close to matching that. Freeman fits that team very well as the LHH compliment to Rendon and Trout, and the Angels are just dumb enough to overpay for it.

The last thing the Braves need is to cut their current 5+ year window down to 2-3 years because they are paying an aging 1B $30M and can't afford to make additions to the roster during Acuna/Albies prime years.

I absolutely hate everything about this and I also think it is 100% right.

You know what I mean by that. It is clear he is not himself and it is also clear he doesn't want to go anywhere.

Freeman is fine. Just a horrible babip. His walks, strikeouts, and power are all among his career bests. Getting a fat contract won't improve that. Only the will of the baseball gods will do that.

Re-signing freeman isn't all about cold numbers and dollars. He is the franchise player, carrying that direct line through Chipper, McGriff, Pendleton, and Murphy. You don't just dump him unless he really really sucks (and he doesn't).

If you want to suck that is the right thinking.

Acuna is ready to step into the role.

Angels have Walsh playing well at 1B. He even pushed out Pujols from the organization. I don’t see the Angels having interest in FF.

Top 1B free agents are FF, Rizzo and Belt. My guess is the Giants will make a big push for FF. Their 1B prospects appear lite as well. I don’t see the Cubs letting Rizzo go. The Rockies may also make a push. The Nats could be a dark horse. Would be quite the coup to steal FF away from the Braves and no longer have to face him.

AA not giving the extension after an MVP season is the smartest, most ballsy decision he's made to date.

And who do the braves play there? If Riley's bat is for real, maybe you play him there and go get a 3b

AA has shown he’s willing to pay premium money on short deals, or lesser money in longer deals. If Freeman wants to be a Brave, a short deal will probably be there for him to sign. If he’s looking for a stupid contract he will have to play elsewhere.

It’s really that simple I imagine, and I hope he signs with the Braves for something like 3/80.

Maybe they could do something with vesting options to give him a potential total dollar value that is competitive while still protecting the team against the risk of decline somewhat. Guarantee 3 years at a slightly higher AAV as you suggested, but with options for each of the next 2-3 years that vest based on plate appearances or other benchmarks (not sure what all is allowed by MLBPA regarding performance clauses).
