FG Grades NLDS Managers

To be clear...

Your position is that a perfectly competent MLB 3B would not be able to handle 1B? And that lack of a 1B defensive specialist is why Olson played all 162 games? Further, if AA targets one of those rare 1B defensive specialists for the bench, Snit will finally be able to rest the weary Matt Olson?

Did I summarize your position correctly?

I sort of took that he is saying that Riley might not be the best guy currently on the team to take that role. In past we used Neck over say JD to hold down first when FF actually took a day off. I think he is saying playing first is not just a throw a glove on and stand there sort of position. And by no means does that mean Olson plays everyday... no one on the team should be playing 150+ games... Twitner is a failure in that regards. But I don't think it is dumb to say Riley might not be the best choice to fill in just because any competent 3B should be able to...

Why does Riley have to be the choice anyway? Contreras being able to play some games at first would be helpful to the cause. If Ozuna is on the roster at this point he needs to be able to play the position as well.

First base is up there with Catcher and CF as positions that take a toll on your body the most.

I would rather not "rest' contreras by putting him at first. He and Darnaud should rotate C and DH.

I agree with Slippy. I would look at WC as a possible 1st base option when facing a tough lefty.. WC can get plenty of rest if everyone is being rotated properly. I am not oppossed to having Riley/WC/ and whoever else on the roster wants a crack at it playing first. Olson should have about 10-20 games off every year.

Good luck expecting snit to rotate everyone properly.

No. My position is that we need a defensively competent back-up to play first base when Olson takes a needed day off and that while a number of players who primarily play 3B can play an adequate 1B, I question whether Riley is one of them. A RHH who could back up Olson would be the ideal situation, but that doesn't necessarily need to be the case.

I think the bigger question is Snit actually resting guys throughout the season, and giving everyone proper time off. We all know that hasnt happened in the past.

???

Contreras is an option at first, because he's not playing every day.

It's not that unusual a set up.

Not sure 1B is terribly demanding but ok.

So here’s where I’m at with the roster. Give me Correa as our starting SS. Next Contreras makes perfect sense next year as a DH/C/1B. With Pina back on the roster he can pick up the slack backing up the Catcher position allowing Contreras to play on a more daily basis. Arcia is capable of backing up the rest of the infield. Duvall makes perfect sense to bring back as a 4th OF coming off a down season and can replace Heradia. Dump Rosario and Ozuna and bring in Pederson to platoon with Duvall and Drury to be our utility man. We’re fully covered all over the diamond and have platoon partners for those that might need extra protection. Lots of sunk costs but shouldn’t break the bank. Rotation is covered. We really just need a lefty and maybe a righty arm depending on what Odorizzi does to round out the pen.

Acuña RF
Harris ll CF
Correa SS
Riley 3B
Olson 1B
Contreras DH
Pederson/d’Arnaud LF/C
d’Arnaud/Duvall C/LF
Albies 2B

Pina C
Arcia IF
Duvall/Pederson OF
Drury UTIL

Fried SP
Strider SP
Wright SP
Morton SP
Soroka/Anderson/Elder SP

Inglsias CP
Minter LHP
Lee LHP
McHugh RHP
Yates RHP
Stephens RHP
LHRP
Odorizzi/RHRP

Competent backups for everyone.

The "no days off theory" is only dusted off to explain slumps after the fact. Not su much to explain same player later in the same season hitting really well.

Players benefit from rest. It’s called load management. Google it.

Olson would have benefited from resting against LHP about 3-5 games this season. Same with Swanson against a couple junk throwing RHPs. Everyone understands this except dinosaurs like Snit…and apparently you?

I don't understand why you can't just point out where someone is mistaken with being a total a-hole about it. Take out the "and apparently you?" portion of your post and it's fine. You'll probably teach some people here by simply advocating for your position instead of attacking someone who has a flawed understanding.

When people stop posting as if they are experts on a topic they are actually ignorant about I'll stop being cheeky in my responses.
