First Former President to Have Home Raided by FBI

Batt should be a good BS detector for MAGA people. He is deeply biased to your side that there is literally nothing that would make him not vote for the Republican candidate. If you cant convince him of your BS conspiracies then that should tell you something.

Barr appointed Durham on the basis of some weird pseudo theory about the FBI not having a proper predicate for opening an investigation of Russian attempts to influence the 2016 elections.

Lest we forget.

They could have taken it all back in June, Bill.

They were told it was all returned in June.

June 3: Bratt and three FBI agents meet with Bobb and Corcoran at Mar-a-Lago and receive the documents gathered in response to the May 11 subpoena. Trump’s lawyers later write in a court filing that the group is greeted in the dining room by Trump, who tells the lawyers to give Bratt and his agents anything they need. The filing indicates that Bratt tours a storage area where documents were stored. Bobb later tells The Washington Post that Bratt opened some of the boxes and flipped through the material inside. In its Aug. 30 court filing, the Justice Department disputed that, telling a judge that Trump’s lawyer “explicitly prohibited government personnel from opening or looking inside any of the boxes that remained in the storage room.” The filing indicates that the custodian of the records signed a written statement certifying: “Based upon the information that has been provided to me, I am authorized to certify, on behalf of the Office of Donald J. Trump, the following: a. A diligent search was conducted of the boxes that were moved from the White House to Florida; b. This search was conducted after receipt of the subpoena, in order to locate any and all documents that are responsive to the subpoena; c. Any and all responsive documents accompany this certification.” The Post has reported that Bobb signed the document.

If that was true they wouldn't have asked for Trump and people to get more locks. The story doesn't add up. Personally, I'm beginning to believe some of the conspiracy theories that the FBI found out that Trump is storing damning info on the FBI and dems. We'll have to wait and see if my hunch is correct.

The whole locks business never happened. But the FBI did ask that the material in the room be better secured. I suspect they suspected not all the requested materials had been turned over. Hence the request they be better secured and interviews with staff (and perhaps Secret Service personnel) working at Mar-a-Lago.

The Justice Department says later that Bratt was given a single folder of documents that analysis shows includes 38 unique documents bearing classification markings, including five documents marked as confidential, 16 documents marked as secret, and 17 documents marked as top secret.

June 8: Bratt emails Corcoran asking that any documents still at Mar-a-Lago be kept in the storage room and not disturbed. “As I previously indicated to you, Mar-a-Lago does not include a secure location authorized for the storage of classified information,” he writes. “As such, it appears that since the time classified documents were removed from the secure facilities at the White House and moved to Mar-a-Lago on or around January 20, 2021, they have not been handled in an appropriate manner or stored in an appropriate location. Accordingly, we ask that the room at Mar-a-Lago where the documents had been stored be secured and that all of the boxes that were moved from the White House to Mar-a-Lago (along with any other items in that room) be preserved in that room in their current condition until further notice,” he wrote.

Every source that I've read from the left and right says there were locks put on the doors.

"Top Department of Justice official Jay Bratt further asked the Trump team to secure that storage room and the former president “directed his staff to place a second lock on the door.”

Anyway, it still doesn't change anything. That tells you the FBI knew there were documents there that they believed were classified. They took some in June but left the others there. As I said the story the FBI is pushing doesn't make sense.

Whether the padlock was changed (or added) doesn't change a thing. The FBI suspected all the documents had not been returned in spite of being told they had been. And that suspicion turned out to be correct.

They asked nicely over and over. And were lied to. Or as Bill Barr puts it "jerked around."

You're making assumptions.

They knew there were still documents there. There is no "if" in his statement.

After the FBI collusion episode you think you'd be somewhat suspicious of the FBI and DOJ in what they're saying.

The way the FBI has acted in this is similar to their Russian Collusion case. Especially the deliberate leaking of info to the press in order to sway public opinion. Same...****ing...****.

The ignoring of precedent established by Judge Jackson for the Clinton case by the FBI doesn't surprise me.

Bush regime coming to the rescue of the Democrats as usual.

Clown show Barr was and currently is - All bluster but doesn't have the courage it takes in this moment in history to save the Republic.

Its ok - He will be known in the history books as a coward.

Its just amazing to see MAGA turn on the people who are massively biased in their favor. But please do go on eating your own, dont let me stop you.

Yes, MAGA is now basically devouring itself. Having to make a suicide choice is inevitable when you work for the Donald. He's gonna ask you to sacrifice every shred of honor and dignity you have left. No bridge is too far for him, but who wants to go to jail?

So the FBI should have just conducted their raid in June? If Trump’s lawyer signed a legal document stating all classified material were handed over and they weren’t, it sounds like the raid would be inevitable? That the FBI suspected that was a lie doesn’t get Trump off the hook, even if the FBI took a weak approach at first.

The lawyers were correct. Trump can declassify at will and his story is that he did just that. It looks bad that the FBI left files they supposedly wanted there and did a raid later. This is 100% political in case you haven't noticed.

I’m gonna let you grapple with the implications of allowing the President to blanket declassify things without going through any formal process, then just ****ing off back to their home with those documents when they are no longer President. Could Joe Biden just declare *every* document is now declassified and ship them off to Delaware at the end of his term?

There is no formal process. I don't know what the limit is or not. You can make a credible argument that the system is way too lenient and things need to be tightened up.

Legal precedent is on Trump's side here. I still think Trump will be charged and possibly convicted because of DC but the case will wind up at SCOTUS where they will follow the law.

Traditionally there always has been:

You might well be right, but let me ask this. Do you think it would be a positive thing for declassification to work in the way Trump supposedly did? Wouldn’t you want some sort of check on that power?
