Folty optioned, D. Castro recalled

Yet when I mentioned the idea a few days ago, I got lambasted for it.

Oh well.

I'm not sure you were really "lambasted," but I stick by the opinion I voiced at the time: I'd have left Foltynewicz up through the end of June, to see if and how much he could rebound, and—were he to continue to stink like a Minooka pork farm—only then would've sent him down.

Can anyone tell me why in the hell this Marimon mf is on this team? He is awful, meanwhile we have 3 guys in the Gwinnett bullpen pitching lights out. Pick one of them, can't be any worse. If he sucks, try another.

saw this on twitter, someone wondering if Folty is being sent down to work as a closer, with the idea that Grilli gets trade by the deadline, interesting thought....

I would hate this. Seriously doubt that it's what we're doing.

Folty had to either spend some time in AAA or have his season cut short to keep him below one year of service time, and he needs a chance to work on some things right now. The move makes sense, I just wish we were sending Teheran down with him.

I find myself completely agnostic about the Folty situation. I'm fine if he's left in MLB to take his lumps. I don't think it'll hurt for him to spend some time in AAA to get his confidence back and work on his secondary stuff. If he gets moved to the bullpen, that doesn't necessarily preclude a move back to the rotation—if it damages him psychologically, then I think you could reasonably argue that he doesn't pack the gear to be a frontline starter anyway.

This season is about figuring out what we've got. That goes for Folty, Banuelos, Perez, and everybody else.

But I thought Folty was ready, you guys?

I thought Heyward was a $25 million player???

Just for *hits and giggles, at $25 million per, Heyward would have earned $9,764,050 so far this season for 12 2Bs, 5 HRs, 18 RBIs, 28 runs, 6 SBs, and a .677 OPS.

That sure seems like a lot of cabbage to pay someone to play RF when his fielding percentage is league-average at his position on defense so far in 2015. To his credit, you've got that range factor, oh wait - his is 1.93 compared to the league-average of 1.96 for RFs. dWAR you say? 0.2. WAR? 0.7 (Markakis happens to be at 1.1).

Somebody else is likely more qualified to do the math when it comes to $/WAR, but Jason doesn't seem to be earning what he's actually getting paid in 2015 any more than Markakis is.

Oh snap!

Big mistake if you ask me.

I'm with you thethe. If the service time was a big deal then we shouldn't have brought him up to begin with until that was right. I don't like to see young pitchers jerked around like this.

I think the decision makers might be laboring under the delusion that we have a chance at the post season. The truth is that our chances of keeping pace in the division aren't good this year but our chances next year and the year after improve drastically if we can get the rookie struggles of some guys out of the way.

I don't like it. But we'll see what the plan is.

maybe he goes down to the AAA with the mission of throwing 50% breaking balls just to get the feel.

Maybe they want to see Wisler get some more innings to make some decisions.

If they are going to make a big trade for Lucroy or a corner OF this year or next, it will likely require a pitcher. Maybe it helps to showcase or see what you've got.

I hate that the fact that 3 teams better than us in the division are scuffling is making us act like we are contenders. Don't consider yourself a contender until you can spend a week over 500.

I'm not an advocate of buying in the least, but I also don't want to wave the white flag. I'm not convinced the Mets or Marlins (esp. them) are any better than us.

This. The "contention" of this team is largely a façade—which is fine, as long as it doesn't cause the front-office to lose sight of rebuilding.

More info from Bowman on why Folty was sent down.

Will Mike Foltynewicz return to the rotation this season?
-- Debbie S. Augusta, Ga.
Initially, I did not agree with last week's decision to send Foltynewicz to Triple-A Gwinnett. Sure, the three starts he made in June were disappointing. But he had impressed during his final two starts in May, and I felt he needed to take his lumps at the Major League level like so many other talented pitchers have in the past. But after asking around, it became apparent that the Braves felt they had to do this to motivate the young hurler.
From a competitive standpoint, Foltynewicz lost his feel for some of his secondary stuff -- primarily his slider -- during those three starts he made this month. But more concerning to the Braves was the lack of urgency the 23-year-old hurler showed during a side session last week at Fenway Park and during some of the recent conversations he had with the coaching staff.

There is certainly not any reason to question the tremendous potential possessed by Foltynewicz, who in terms of "stuff" stands as one of the most impressive pitching prospects the Braves have possessed over the past 20 years. He will likely return to the rotation at some point this year and at that time, we'll learn whether he did indeed benefit from this "wake-up call."

Good lord Bowman, you need to stop reading thethe posts.

CB and Folty both getting tagged with attitude issues by braves....interesting.

Did CB get tagged with attitude issues?

There's a difference from going into in game auto pilot (which is his primary criticism defensively) and having an attitude problem. But I could be wrong
