Former Brave Adam LaRoche retiring.

I agree with what seems like the predominate feeling. Great for Adam to want to hang with kid.. but you are not so special that you get to take him like he is attached. No, Ball players are not like other jobs.. but club houses and locker rooms are for players. Guys don't want to walk on egg shells or stress that there is a minor lurking around the corner. bring him with you on the road.. fine.. just arrange for someone to watch him while you work..

I see nothing wrong with what the White Sox asked. The executive is right in trying to set some reasonable limits. It's work. The kid shouldn't be allowed to be there all the time. What if every player did that?

It's absolutely the team's right to set that limitation. There's nothing wrong with that. It's also absolutely Adam's right to walk away. Nothing wrong with that either. I think too much is made over this. It's simply a case where the conditions set by the employer were not ones that an employee wanted to work under so the employee quit. Happens all the time.

Yeah, LaRoche can do whatever he wants, but it seems like weird parenting to have your kid in the clubhouse every single day. Even if you want to grant that it's a positive to have his family on the road with him everywhere, it's a bit crazy to assume an employer should allow any employee to bring his kid to work at all times.

Yep, have to agree that it's a very odd assumption on Adam's part that he can impose his kid on everyone else in the locker room every day. This isn't a company softball league. It's a multi-billion dollar business. Regardless of how loved the kid might be to what sounds like the majority of guys in that clubhouse, it's simply not appropriate.

Saying that, seems apparent that Adam has been contemplating hanging it up for a while now. Last year had to have taken the enthusiasm out of his love for playing. Guess bringing the kid was the only thing getting him through the daily grind.

Apparently the team almost boycotted over Williams asking Laroche not to bring his kid every day. That's pretty interesting.

Very interesting. Here's a pretty good article about what happened.

"The White Sox have always encouraged players to bring their kids into the clubhouse and onto the field, according to Williams. But he said he thought Drake LaRoche was there too much."

Looks like this issue is the White Sox creation.

Stupid question: he's 13? Isn't he in school, or does he have the best spring break ever?

And if he's homeschooled, then why isn't he at home?

Both sides need a reality check.

"LaRoche prefers the education of the ballpark to school. Drake goes to traditional school only in the winter. He spent springs and summers with his father, and even as recently as this week, he was fully outfitted in a White Sox uniform and shagging fly balls, just like he did last season and the two previous with the Washington Nationals, who first allowed Drake to tag along."

And considering the money LaRoche has, the education that kid gets in the winter is probably better than the one most kids get who go to school far more often.

Also interesting from that article:
"Chicago-area radio host David Kaplan said Drake being allowed in the clubhouse was part of LaRoche’s deal to sign with Chicago for two years and $25 million before 2015, and the Twitter account of LaRoche’s company, E3 Meat, tweeted out a thumbs up emoji, followed by: “you are on to something.”

going by what I heard on radio... can't see how he could go to traditional school. Laws regulate absences.. has to be a form of private or tutored school

Hmmmm. If it was part of his contract, might they still have to pay at least part of his contract this year? I know we don't know what the specific language covers, but is it possible they are violating the contract in some way? Could get interesting.

I doubt it was in the actual contract. It was probably part of a handshake agreement. If it was part of the contract then the Whitesox would be in breach and would owe LaRoche at least a portion of his contract.

However, LaRoche saying he values what the kid will learn in the clubhouse over what he learns in school is quite silly.

It isn't that silly.

I think it's pretty damn silly.
Kids should be in school interacting with and learning from other kids as well as learning, you know, what's taught in school. You can't condense everything down to just learning in the winter.

There's a report out now that some players had complained about LaRoche bringing his kid in every day but the vast majority of players supported LaRoche.

Man, that team is a dumpster fire.
