Former Brave Jordan Schafer may make MLB again as LHP...

Braves1976

It's OVER 5,000!
Jordan Schafer is pitching for the Dodgers AA affiliate now and actually doing great through six games. If he keeps it up he'll probably make MLB again as a LHP reliever. He might prove a pretty good one too. Check out his stats so far: http://m.mlb.com/player/457788/jordan-schafer

He apparently sits around 89-91 with his fastball. Maybe we can get him on the cheap to replace EOF later this season? Then he can play OF if anyone gets hurt and even pinch run and steal bases. That would make him a nice player to have if his pitching works out.

Here's a link of video of him pitching: https://twitter.com/BravesReddit/status/720961020794023936.

This story makes me want to see Simmons (now with the Angels) closing a game just once. I could picture him 97-99 mph a la Viz or Kimbrel. :)

Not exactly throwing smoke, but he's not getting lit up.

Seriously, a few baseball people were surprised when the Braves drafted Schafer as an OF and not as a pitcher. Braves have gone against conventional wisdom with a few two-way players they've drafted, but it has usually worked out for them. Most scouts thought Andrelton Simmons was a better pitching prospect than hitting prospect and Ryan Klesko fell in the draft because of an arm injury that dimmed his status as a LHP prospect. He was one of the top pitching prospects in the country prior to his arm problems.

LaRoche was a two way guy as well but I'm pretty sure he was requesting to be drafted as a hitter.

But good for him if he can make it. Loogy has to be the easiest path to the majors.

Didn't Shanks say that we were drooling over Markakis in the 2003 draft, but wanted him as a pitcher?

Anyway, good for Jordan. No reason not to try something like this with a guy like him- you don't really worry about ruining the career of a 29-year-old outfielder with a career 70 OPS+. Might as well let him try.

Most people had Riley pegged as a pitcher as well.

Good memory on Markakis. I remember Shanks writing that.

smootness is right on Riley as well.

Kyle Davies was also a heralded two-way player, but scouts only saw him as a pitcher.

Which bathroom did he use at the stadiums during games? Home team or away? There is a big issue of that in North Carolina right now, where he played some games for Richmond while in Durham.

You know, some fans here wondered if he played for the other team the way he gave up homers and got hit hard.
