France attack...

Here's another good one -

http://fullcomment.nationalpost.com/2010/09/08/christopher-hitchens-it-isn’t-just-islam/

“Now to Islam. It is, first, a religion that makes very large claims for itself, purporting to be the last and final word of God and expressing an ambition to become the world’s only religion. Some of its adherents follow or advocate the practice of plural marriage, forced marriage, female circumcision, compulsory veiling of women and censorship of non-Muslim magazines and media. Islam’s teachings generally exhibit suspicion of the very idea of church-state separation. Other teachings, depending on context, can be held to exhibit a very strong dislike of other religions, as well as of heretical forms of Islam. Muslims in America, including members of the armed forces, have already been found willing to respond to orders issued by foreign terrorist organizations. Most disturbingly, no authority within the faith appears to have the power to rule decisively that such practices, or such teachings, or such actions, are definitely and utterly in conflict with the precepts of the religion itself.”

There is no time to deliberate any longer. The threat is clear to anyone that wants to admit it. We must be vigilant and drive these people out of this world.

I hope the ignorant fools in our world realize soon Dalyn. It can't be any more clear what the threat is and what needs to be done.

Do you (and Dalyn) think that the fact that the rest of the world isn't "on board" is significant. Russia has the Caucasus. China has the Uighurs. Still, we're working at cross purposes. Which is more likely: that the threat you've described is indeed a threat to all non-Muslim nations, or that the threat is being manipulated by all sides to achieve political and strategic goals.

Think back to the GWB War on Terror days. Putin was glad to embrace Bush and decry the menace of terrorism because it gave him latitude to operate in the Caucasus without restraint. Turkey refused to let us use their airspace for OIF in part because of our relationship with the Kurds in northern Iraq. I had two Turkish friends that I talked to a good bit in those days and they were fond of reminding me that, while Bush was declaring a global War on Terror, their country was the frequent victim of terrorist bombings carried out by Kurdish separatists. Those Kurds were friends of our friends, or at least enemies of our enemies, so the violence against the Turks somehow didn't rate. The rabid anti-Bush sentiment in Turkey was mostly just manipulation and misdirection by Turkish politicians, but it was at least grounded in legitimate opposition to that hypocrisy.

I'm sympathetic to your point of view, but I see a tendency towards oversimplification.

I'm sympathetic to your point Julio - but would also add that the view you present about the Turks/Kurds is a simplification itself. I have friends - several friends in Turkey myself and let's just say Turks don't want Westerners in Eastern Turkey for long. Wouldn't want the world to see what they do to Kurds.

You are blind if you don't see the growing global threat. These people will never be able to be reasoned with.

ever wondered how Islamics can become so hostile ??

Their faith.

This concept that they hate us because of us bombing them is insanity. Our very presence on this eaearth irritates them because we don't believe exactly what they believe.

... they hate us because we disrespect their existence.

Rudy summed it up best "They just need a Christian U.S. president to tell them what to do"

"They hate us because we bomb them"

is apparently an absurd notion.

I know I would hate someone if they bombed me. But I'm absurd I guess

It is absurd because they would still hate us regardless if we dropped any. You are totally lost on this issue and the world is finally coming around. They killed people because they drew pictures. They kill people because they can't read out of a book. These people are animals and need to be wiped out.

I could be wrong but I doubt Rudy would know a Christian president if one bitch slapped him, although I'd pay to see it.

Oh and I think Bill Maher actually said it best on this issue, "Now I'm not gonna say Islam isn't a religion of peace, cause if you do, they'll kill you".

I really do believe most Muslims are peaceful people who just want to live their lives in peace and worship how they want to worship. With that said there are more than a few who are dangerous rabid dogs who need to be hunted down and shot, not because we should enjoy that sort thing, but because we should be protecting the innocents of that world, and this one.

Of course that's just my opinion.

If Russia ever bombed and occupied this country, my guess is our entire country would hate Russia.

That's just my guess

THis should be everyones opinion. These people are animals and will kill anyone they can if they don't live their lives according to a book. How anyone cannot think this is the most important challenge our generation faces is beyond me. There are cells operating all over the world and if this is not stopped the way we live our lives in the future is going to dramatically change.

What is frustrating is that so many like sturg, 57 and others, want to find the rationale for acts of physical jihad exclusively outside of the Islamic doctrine of jihadists. While I have no problem believing there is additional context, I don't get why there is a seeming refusal of some to place any or significant blame on ideology.

Its incredibly frustrating and a dangerous line of thought.

All you have to do is take a look at history to see the flaw in that notion. Like Hitchens wrote, we basically blew their soft conquest out of the water when we went to war with them. Did it give them some fresh reasons to turn their attention toward us? Sure. Does that mean they weren't a threat before? Absolutely not. Quite the opposite, in fact.
