freddie freeman contract extension?

Unless he goes on a discount I'm not interested. It will be hard to replace him, but not as hard as to eat 20+M of injured reserve time. Freeman is a big boi. When big boi's age they tend to age harshly.

It's pretty simple. Moneyball means getting the most value for most efficient amount of money.

When first basemen get old their value declines, defensively and offensively. So it wouldn't be smart for a team with a mid-market payroll like us to spend big money on Freddie when he's already leaving his prime years.

The 90's Braves could afford to keep the Big 3 and others because we had the #1 payroll in baseball.

This exactly. No one is saying they wouldn’t love to see Freddie be a Brave forever, we’re looking at it from a logical standpoint. Look at Pujols, Miguel Cabrera, etc. all signed giant contracts and their teams are struggling now due to them. We can’t tie up the amount of money Freeman will desire, nor should we. Let a stupider team pay him exorbitant money while he declines.

Pujols and Miggy and who else? Thome, Bagwells, and Thomas played extremely well into their late 30's, even if they did miss some time due to injury.

Not that I am disagreeing with your general premise, just trying to decipher your post.

3 years is reasonable, imo, as is the average annual salary which is costantly increasing.

Thomas and Thome had the luxury of the designated hitter.
 
A dumb Freeman extension might be the first step in forcing another extended rebuild.

Luckily the AA FO seems to be smart enough not to let that happen.

The player to extend in the next few months is Soroka.

The shoulder injury would worry me with Soroka. If he would sign the Teheran extension I would do it, but otherwise I would just ride it out. Five years is an eternity with pitchers.
 
Rebuilds are gonna happen. I would rather see lifetime Braves. As cursed as this franchise is when we do win a championship it will be pure luck talent doesn't seem to matter.

What do you think about Dansby?

Getting some option years on Soroka seems like a worthwhile pursuit.

Thomas. He obviously was nowhere near the same hitter the first half of his career. He also was injured a ton like Chipper and could DH whenever. Even before his decline started at age 33 he was already DHing. When his decline hit in 2001 he played a total of 38 games at 1B the rest of his career. I have no doubt he would have suffered offensively, and been a huge liability defensively, had he been forced to play 1B.
