Freddie to third base??

I think this might be viable if we still had Andrelton. Simmons and Swanson up the middle could have allowed Andrelton to play a little closer to 3B.

If we still had Simmons we wouldn't have to even consider it, we'd have Swanson at 3B, Simba at SS, and Albies at 2B through 2020.

So, wait for an article at MLBTR, then use that as a thread "idea"...

6 man rotation when Colon gets back too?

I'm not a huge advocate of Freddie at 3rd... but if he's chomping at the bit to try it, he is pretty athletic for a first baseman (deceptively)... He shows some nice range getting all the crazy balls thrown to him. If he can have adequate range and his arm is decent, wouldn't hurt to see if he could do it in a lost year. First baseman are a lot easier to find than 3rd baseman. Then when one of our big gun prospects are ready at 3rd, he can move back to first.

I think it's key that Freddie is back after the All Star break. This gives them a few weeks to "try it out". If it is a complete failure...you trade Adams.

Oh boy, enscheff is really conflicted now. Fangraphs supports the move

He spent the entire article talking himself into calling Freeman a -5 to -10 run guy at 3B. That is Adonis territory. I find it dubious, at best, that Freeman will not be worse at 3B than Adonis.

Notice he completely glossed over the very pertinent Miggy comparison? Let's look at that comp a little...

We saw Miguel Cabrera, a man who played a lot of 3B in his career, go from being a -20 run guy at 3B in 2013 to being a +4 run guy at 1B in 2014. The year before that, Cabrera was a -11 run guy at 3B in 2012.

Last year Freeman was a +4 guy at 1B, and on pace for about that this year.

So...yeah...Cabrera went from being worse at 3B than Kemp has been in LF for the Braves in 2012, to being roughly equal to Freeman at 1B in 2013.

Miggy showed us that taking a +4 guy at 1B and move him to 3B, gives you a guy that will be anywhere from -10 to -20 runs on defense.

Finally, he said "why not?", which isn't exactly supporting the move haha.

I really have doubts this works. In fact, I don't think it will. That said, what one completely different player did in the same situation really doesn't prove anything

Thanks for saying this. I was about to say that what Miggy did shows who Miggy is, and does not really translate to what Freddie will do. I also have my doubts about this, but it will be fun to see what actually happens. I already watch the games with interest, and this will add one more really interesting thing to grab my attention (and most of you guys as well).

I would say Miggy and Freeman are very similar players. If anything, I would claim Miggy is the superior athlete.

Let me see if I can find out how Pujols did between 3B/1B.

This is it. We're going to trade Adams anyhow. This move gives Freddie some time to have some fun playing 3B and allows us to get a better value for Adams showing that we have "options".

I can't see how anyone could ahve any issue with this

Found it...

In the early-mid 2000's Pujols was a +1 to +21 guy at 1B. He was elite over there.

2002 was the last year he played any meaningful innings at 3B, and he was -7.

Who here is willing to claim Freeman will be as good at 3B as a young Pujols? The same young Pujols that was many times better at 1B than Freeman currently is?

We see this -15 to -25 run delta between 1B and 3B defense for guys like Miggy and Pujols. Assuming we will see anything different with Freeman is being willingly naive.

We might have to play an exaggerated shift on every player. Or they come up with some way to hide him...making things up maybe he plays close to the line and shallow and they tell Dansby to do his best on the rest.

I'd expect -20 from him.
