Freeman Trade Speculation

Hanley is someone I would target.
Since Dombroski is trying to remake the RSox, what do you all think about for an H Ramirez for Markakis IF it also nets you Moncada or Devers? You play Ramirez at SS OR 3B. The net payroll difference is $11M adder per year for the next three years plus a potential option on Ramirez.

I doubt the Sox would do it. But, then, I didn't think they would pay what they did to get Kimbrel and they sure seem to want Ramirez out of there.

Putting Hanley in a clubhouse full of young players you're trying to develop is absolute suicide. Don't think the Braves would want him if it landed them BOTH Moncada and Devers unless they were going to release him before the press conference to announce the trade.

I wouldn't "target" him unless I was holding a bazooka.

I don't think money is a problem for the Red Sox. If they wanted to get rid of Hanley that badly, they'd just release him or take on all his salary in a trade for a non-prospect. They aren't attaching top 20 prospects to move his contract.

For the record, I would give up Freeman in a deal if it netted us Moncada and possibly Devers. Probably Miller, too. Sign me up for Moncada and Devers for anyone the Sox want.

I called into the Front Office on XM radio this morning to ask their opinion on the Freeman situation, I asked if they think the Yankees would look into a trade for Freeman or if it made more sense for someone like the Cardinals....

Their response was pretty interesting. They mentioned that they felt the perfect fit would actually be someone like the Pirates and wondered if they would give up Tyler Glasnow.

Thoughts?

Realistically I don't think we trade Freeman. But if we do, can we get a Tex like package for him? Say Freeman and a pen arm for 4 pieces? I don't want to trade Free, but if Pitt would give up Glasnow and one of Meadows/Bell plus 2 others, I'd have to listen intently. Same goes for Houston, they have a lot of pieces that are intriguing: Appel, Tucker, Reed, Moran, Kemp, Davis, Daz, Martes, etc.

Again, I don't think we will deal him, but I'm curious what he could bring given our window to compete has moved further backwards.

Freeman's projected value is higher than Simmons by about 1 win per season imo. However, in looking at his surplus value (projected value minus salary) I would argue that Simmons is the slightly more valuable trade chip. Freeman is going to make almost 9M/year more than Simmons over the next five years.

Realistically, you can get a prospect ranked about 20 for Freeman plus one or two secondary pieces. If someone offered you a Top 10 prospect for Freeman you should probably do it.

Here are the guys BA had 1-25 in their mid-season Top 50.

I highly doubt we trade Freeman because, as others have mentioned, we don't have a 1B who will be ready within the next 2-3 years. Albies' presence made Simmons more expendable.

If Riley has a massive year and the FO feels he's more of a 1B than a 3B, then you could see something happen after the year, but I doubt that as well. You absolutely can not get rid of literally everyone before moving into a new stadium.

Olivera could play first.

I understand their angle, but just don't buy it. Pittsburgh's already facing a monster of a tough situation when McCutchen's deal is up following next season and with Gerrit Cole's salary beginning to explode after next season. I do think Freddie could absolutely be the piece that gets them over the top, and while I might be willing to trade a couple pretty high-ceiling pieces and hope that he is exactly that, I'm not sure Neal Huntington's that big a gambler.

On one hand it makes all the sense in the world IF and only IF they don't include Austin Meadows. Of course if I'm the Johns, I won't make the trade unless he's the headliner - he's your "new" Frenchy/Mac/Heyward - the local kid that's going to be the next star - and he'll be ready for the day you open the new park. If Freddie helped get them a ring within the next two years, maybe (and that's a miniature "maybe") the fans don't burn his house down when they have to let McCutchen go because they have to pay Freeman and Cole. They're really high on Meadows (as tons of people are), and if he could step in and be 80% as productive as McCutchen it'd be a huge success, but if he's not there to do that, Huntington likely gets burned in effigy outside their park before every home game in 2018.

They were a 90+ win team WITHOUT Freeman this season, and you could argue they're already the favorites in the Central in 2016 if/when they add Glasnow (and possibly Jameson Taillon) to their rotation even if the Cards add an "Ace" AND they get at least Heyward or better production from both Grichuk and Piscotty and even if the Cubs add an "Ace" as well.

Again, I can see where it's a gamble worth taking from the Pirates perspective. However - if it doesn't work out and you were the one that makes that call - would you be willing to be the guy who let one of the (if not THE) most popular players in franchise history go to take that shot???

Considering the fact that Dombrowski apparently intends to hang onto most of the rest of the prospects in Boston, there's apparently only one team that's a "fit" for Freeman IMO, and that's Houston (and he makes almost as much sense there as he does in Pittsburgh if not even more). I shudder when typing it, but if Luhnow calls Coppy and offers A. J. Reed and J. D. Davis, I think you have to rip his arm off.

Please no..

Interesting point raised by Rosenthal

Another issue: The Braves, who do not include no-trade clauses in contracts, likely are losing credibility with their own players. Kimbrel and Simmons did not sign their new deals early in 2014 thinking they would be traded so quickly. The same goes for Freeman and Teheran, who – for now - remain with the club.

So do Price and Greinke laugh at us if we approach them. They both supposedly love the Braves.

Pretty sure the Simmons trade signals they won't even bother contacting any top-end guys for sure.

Trading Simmons, Freeman, Teheran, etc. is not the road I want to go down. However, I'm okay with it if we clearly win the trades. After seeing what has happened w/ Olivera and Simmons though, it's hard to have confidence we can clearly win these types of trades.

Our rush and eagerness to get deals done might be hurting us. Our best trade by far was Kimbrel and that was the only one as far as I can tell where we played hard to get. It is Negotiating 101. But I'm sure Coppy has taken the advanced classes and I'm just not getting it.
