FRIDAY MINORS FINAL 5/3/19; 4 strong mound jobs; Withrow wins '19 debut

A couple of years ago our minor league hitters were an issue and now we have less concerns about the hitting than we do the pitching. Waters has been great so far. Curious to see what isle AA shops in with him and Pache doing so well.

It's more likely we keep Waters unless we get something huge for him. Ender's going to be the guy that is out the door pretty soon, it might come as a bit of a shock here, but Pache arguably plays better CF defense than him now (this is not joking around), and he's a candidate for defensive awards as soon as he's up full time. Ronald was compared to Andruw at times for his offense but not defense, but Pache's comps to Andruw on defense are legit. Nobody is joking.

The hitting was arguably more noticeable in 2016 than any of the pitchers then.

Unless they are totally bowled over by a proposal, my guess is they will keep both Waters and Pache. Ender will probably be moved once at least one of these two is deemed ready and Markakis will be a year-to-year decision. All things equal, in 2021 we probably see an Acuna-Pache-Waters OF.

Riley now at wRC+ 135 with a 8.5/20.5 BB/K% and .305 isoSLG.

That'll do donkey. That'll do.

Waters spray chart is real interesting. At almost every stop he started going the other way more and focusing on pulling less.

2018 A: 43.6/21.4/35.0 (Pull/Center/Opposite%)
2018 A+: 39.6/23.1/37.4
2019 AA: 36.8/23.7/39.5

Whats even more interesting is that his LD rates are actually INCREASING

2018 A: 21.4%
2018 A+: 22.5%
2019 AA: 24.3%

We all know he has a crazy BABIP this year but what I wonder is if there are studies that show players who have a more varied spray chart tend to generate higher BABIP's relative to their LD percentages.

Can we get Encheff on the case here?

Based on what I’ve seen I don’t think we are adding anything next year.
Jd 23 million
Oday 9 million
Tehran 10 million after the buy out

I think they go with Riley at 3b after comargo holds down service time.

Keep the same if we have now.

Spend 10 million on the pen

Extend Freddie to placate fans.

Liberty pockets 20 plus million

I don’t want to spend just to spend. If we field a great team with fewer question marks for 120 million then great. I don’t care what Liberty makes in that case.

It is possible that we have a homegrown lineup in 2021 or 2022. Riley at 3rd, Waters and Pache in the OF, and Contreras at catcher with all the current homegrown guys coming back. It would take a pretty extraordinary set of circumstances, but it is possible.

One thing I think we take for granted is how immensely lucky we have been in terms of player development. Two or three years ago everyone was dwelling on our lack of position player prospects. Somehow we developed the best young hitter in baseball, an all star 2nd basemen, and a SS who looks like he is taking his game to another level. Not to mention a very good utility player in Camargo. We also have 4 other top 100 prospects who are playing really well at the moment. Really, really lucky.

Luck certainly plays a part, but giving no credit at all to the player development people is laughable. Lots of teams have plenty of talent in their systems as well - sometimes you're a little more apt to get "lucky" if you're good at what you do.

Swanson, albies, and acuna were all top 10 prospects at one point. Hitting on all of them does have some luck to it.
