Braves prospects on twitter posted the walks by Newcombe....they could all of Ben kid

He mentioned aaa zone was tight this year

Looking at just walks doesn't tell the whole story. Are we talking about missing by smaller margins on average? Are there even stats for that?

To hear some guys talk...you would think he had a 4+ ERA instead of a sub 3. He has the stuff to get out of jams. That won't always happen, but it certainly helps his chances.

I saw this tonight too and very rarely pay attention to it, especially when it's one of the Braves prospect fanboys on Twitter. Newcomb came into the game walking 5.2 per 9, the umpires are the least of his issues.

Yes. Newcomb is a big lefty who throws hard and misses bats. I get why that's exciting. 5 walks per 9 is not the umps' fault. I wish people would chill with that. He's doing well and I hope to see him in ATL soon, but to think that MLB umpires are going to make an appreciable difference in his walk rate just seems silly.

They deal with that and also have to pitch through more errors.

Bad umps and worse fielders, sure, particularly in the low minors. But is that enough to make up for pitching against worse hitters? That's not snark, but a legit question.

Pictures suggested bad calls

The interesting thing to me was he said all of aaa is a small zone. Didnt say they were picking on Newcombe

Newcomb's walks are a problem but not as big a problem as they could be. His stuff is so good that he doesn't give up many hits and he gives up very, very few HRs. That limits the damage of his walks.

Still, the walks will determine how good he's going to be. Is he Gio Gonzalez or is he Jon Lester.

Looking for some comps to Newcomb along the following criteria: lefty, drafted out of college, high strikeout and walk numbers in AA and AAA, ranked in the 20-100 range in BA's annual rankings.

Here are some I come up with:

Jonathan Sanchez
Aaron Poreda
Drew Pomeranz
James Paxton
Danny Hultzen

Why hasn't Pike been promoted yet?
Dude is completely wasting his time pitching against kids half his age.

Colon needs to be released so Newcomb can get promoted and subsequently get Pike moved up in the process. This dude is dominating and needs to be pushed. This is his fourth season in high A ball now and he's clearly showing he's got it. Time to move now.

Yea, he probably needs to be moved up, but its not a huge deal IMO. Certainly not going to release Colon and promote Newcomb with the idea of benefiting Pike.
