Gattis being shopped to AL Teams

@DOBrienAJC: #Braves Hart said flatly that reports of them pushing to trade Gattis are wrong. They'll listen, but not pushing any trades at this point.

@DOBrienAJC: #Braves Hart reiterated that Gattis in LF is legitimate option, because of his power and under contractual control 4 years.

In the end any trade depends on the return. But given the team's offensive issues, I find it hard to believe they are seriously contemplating adding Bethancourt to the everyday lineup.

What trends are people looking at when they declare that Bethancourt can't or won't hit in the majors? Besides, putting Bethancourt behind the plate could, in a year, mean the Braves would have three Gold Glove caliber players in their lineup. THAT's doing things the Braves way.

Well: OBP/isoOBP, BB-rate, especially, along with modestly low-slugging—which, in conjunction with the first two indices, leads to fairly empty AVG even if the AVG itself is respectable—plus the danger of a lot of GIDP, even for a catcher.

If Bethancourt hits .250/.275/.400 in the major-leagues—a sort of best case for him, I think, at least over the next couple years—the Braves are going to really need to upgrade the offense at a few other positions to compensate, Gold Glove or not. These conditions, in turn, also make the idea of trading either Upton or Heyward (much less both) a lot less viable.

Curious what the league average line is for a catcher. I'd be much more concerned with not only his defense, but also his game calling. If he calls a great game, that adds so much more to our team.

245/309/380 - 689 was the line for Catchers across MLB in 2014.

I think CB could get somewhere close to that. And if his defense is good as everybody makes it out to be I can see him being an above average catcher. That said if the Braves do move Gattis then he has to bring back offense somewhere else. Because the offense at center, third, short, and second overall was just atrocious. The Braves can live with an averageish bat at catcher. But they can't live with that while having 4 other positions being among the worst in baseball offensively.

I don't think there is anything of substance behind Hart saying Gattis is an option for LF. He most certainly is not, but saying so makes it seem like trading him isn't a forgone conclusion which might help increase other teams' offers.

Thank you. At least somebody gets it.

If you can't get on base in the minors you're probably not going to magically get on base in the majors.

His entire minor league career?

In Rico's defense, other guys have put it together in the majors. Ben Zobrist didn't show great power until he was 27, Joey Bats didn't show amazing power until he was like 30. Sometimes players take longer to figure out their power stroke, maybe Bethancourt is that. That said, I still don't keep him over Gattis. Gattis is the man for catcher for us.

Well Gattis is either going to be used to unload a contract or acquire top prospects. That's how much value he has especially to an AL team.

Yeah, if everybody should keep posting "trade package with BJ." Then maybe somebody from the Braves front office will see the wisdom, while simultaneously regretting not thinking of that idea first. It didn't work for Uggla but just might this time, if the posts keep coming!

Sure, but wayyyyy more players never figure it out or lose it.

I'd rather trade Bethancourt and get someone like John Jaso as backup for Gattis.
That would be nice for this year, but theres no chance a 6'4" 260 lb dude with a history of knee and back injuries sticks at C much longer. Theres at least a small chance CB will be a decent starting catcher in the future.

And if you have Jaso you can keep him around when Gattis goes to **** and get a right-handed backup who can hit lefties.

DH is not coming to the NL full time soon however it will be used across the board in inter league regardless. It is an idea that pleases everybody.
