GDT: 07/22/2013: Braves at Mets Jason Playing in CF

it was the #1 play on Sportscenter....until ESPN decided to pull out some stupid ass little league play and put that at #1....

I will defend the BJ signing all day because I thought it was decent at the time but after seeing that catch I have to ask why they signed BJ when Heyward could play CF.

I might have to say that Heyward's catch was better.

Things to consider:
1) Heyward is like twice the size of Andruw.
2) Heyward hasn't played CF regularly.
3) It was raining during the play.
4) Since it was raining for a while, that means the ground is pretty wet and slip potential.
5) The Andruw catch would've only made the score 2-1, Heyward misses, that's 2 runs scoring and a loss.

But Andruw had a lot more ground to cover, and then he had to dive on that hard ass turf.

Watching that Andruw catch, I'm convinced the video was spliced and we saw two different plays. There is no way a regular human being gets to that ball.

How does BJ crack the starting lineup now that we know Jason can play a great defensive CF? Has to be Gattis, Heyward, and Upton for the rest of the year doesn't it? We can bring BJ in for defense late in the game or use him to pinch run.

I need a GIF of Kimbrel saying "Oh my god" after that catch.

Just for you Julio, I made a couple for you

The thinking is JHey is too big to play CF regularly. Have heard it said that playing CF took 5 productive years off Murphy's career and Heyward has 3-4 inches and 25-30 pounds on Murph!

Still can't get over that catch. Heyward is so gifted. I just wish he would start hitting.

he will -- first he needs to stay healthy. Whenever it looks like he's found a rhythm something crazy like appendicitis ...

I was one of the whiners in here last night, but that was a great comeback win and a great catch by Heyward. 7 games up now and I still think either we are not as good as we thought or our best baseball is yet to be played. Lets put away the Nats/Phils starting tonight. This team needs to play every inning like they do from 7th inning on, and go on a nice winning streak.

Gnats were relieved we came back last night. It enabled them to hold on to a three game lead over the Mets.

For those asking for Heyward to be the primary CF long term, I don't think the question was ever if he could handle the position, we have to consider the wear and tear it would take on his body over the years. I think people brought up the Griffey comparison in the off season and what it did for his career long term.

Jason is probably going to bulk up and slow down as he ages, too. I have no doubt he could play a terrific CF right now, but I would rather keep his elite D if RF and prolong his career.

I think they have played every game the way they did from the 7th on. Remember, they are in first place and get everyone's best shot, injuries and the teams they play are in the MLB too. This isn't football where talent can get you by by playing 1/2 speed sometimes. Dillon Gee has over the years been very tough on the Braves. Only bright spot I see in this series is they don't get Harvey. The Mets are playing very good baseball -- as were the Sox over the weekend

Understandable. It just makes me wonder though watching Mac go thru the left side in the 9th last night and guys working counts in the late innings, etc...If they did that all game long, this would be a lethal offensive team.

And Heyward is taller than Griffey.

I did a post on the topic a year or 2 ago on scout. And it's uncanny the number of CF over 6'0 tall who don't have long productive careers into their 30s, Griffey, Druw, Sizemore, Gutierrez, Murph, Beltran (he's been able to hit later into his career but couldn't play CF, heck he can barely play RF now) and many more. There have been exceptions of course, Edmonds being one, but none who've been close to 6'6. Infact the 6'1 seems to be the high point since that is Beltran and Edmonds's height. And a few HOF exceptions like Cobb and Dimaggio, but even those guys were not sniffing 6'6.

There's a reason Andruw is arguably the best defender of all time and certainly the best defender anyone under the age of 25 saw a lot (Ozzie is the only other noe in the park with him and he was more or less done when 1990 rolled around.
