I'm struggling to make sense of all of this

Only thing I'd say is this is two years in a row we've had weird pitcher ailments going into playoffs. Fried sick / blister and last year Strider. All three starts between the two went awful. So the only thing I'm wondering is maybe the approach needs to be you are either 1.) healthy enough to pitch on the final day or two of regular season and get your tune-up or 2.) just shouldn't be pitching. Maybe its just random, but we've had 3 starts these past two years off these ailments and all have gone horrible wrong
