GDT #19 4/21/14: Marlins (Koehler) @ Braves (Teheran), 7:10

I know his throwing is getting criticized (as it should be) but all the metrics are really being favorable to Gattis so far this year in terms of his defensive ability. I think he is really nimble behind the plate blocking a lot of balls and we all know that his pitch framing has been excellent so far.

This is why I don't get the rush to call up a kid who hasn't hit in the minors much. Gattis will always have his AB's where you say WTF but overall this guy might be one of the top 5-10 catchers in the sport in terms of overall value.

I am not sure. Power but obp still very low

I wonder how many homeruns Gattis could hit in the AL at DH.

You know a few (more than a few) AL teams are thinking that.

I love Gattis (obviously) but you have you wonder just how much an AL team would give us for him.

"When I was in the minor leagues I imagined myself jogging around the bases,” Gattis said. “Same big dumb animal, just running around the bases in the big leagues instead of the minors.”

Evan Gattis ladies and gentlemen.... hard not to like a guy with self depricating humor.

I'm fully on board as one of my favorite braves.

Gattis dials in on mistakes. He rarely misses the meat pitch. Pitchers have to be VERY careful. He has as much raw power as I have seen.

Great trend so far on the early season is that the percentage of balls he swings which are outside of the strike zone has decreased. IT could be small sample noise but its a positive. Gattis needs to prove that if pitchers stop throwing him strikes that he will walk.

If that walk rate ever spikes then who knows how valuable he is going to be.

25 but only because he is given an lot of extra rest due to this being his first full season catching. If given 600 at bats he could hit 40.

I think Bethancourt is going to be a quality backup catcher that complements Gattis well. I would use Bethancourt to counter teams that run alot. For home games I might even start Bethancourt and bat him 8th and replace him with Gattis in his first at bat.

I had the same thought the other day. The big thing for Gattis is likely going to be durability. If Bethancourt shows he can hit with any measure of consistency, he could serve in a nice tandem. Always nice to have a 3rd catcher on the team as well, provided they can play positions other than C. Doumit hasn't done much this season, but he's not a bad guy for that role.

I am glad you didn't mention anything about his ability or lack thereof to throw base runners out.

So you think that his numbers are all on him?

How important do you think throwing out runners is in comparison to other things a catcher must do?

You are the one that seems to think his base stealers are never on him, but the pitcher is always at fault.

Throwing out runners ranks pretty high in my opinion. Keeping a runner at first or even throwing someone out goes a long ways. Base hit a guy isn't scoring from first, but when he steals second it's an entirely different story.

I'm not saying it isn't a weakness of his but its not close to the top of what is important for a catcher. Controlling the running game is as much on the pitcher (if not more) than it is the catcher.

Gattis's arm isn't my concern, it's his ability to block.

I think that will come with experience. He seems to be adapting well to catching full-time, considering he had a 5 year stint of not playing baseball.

The problem is Laird is mentoring him. Laird is awful as a receiver and everything else behind the plate. If Gattis had a Ross or Eddie Perez mentor him he'd be in better shape.

I think Eddie was extremely underrated in the way he could frame Maddux's pitches.
