GDT--3/8/18--Astros

Kazmir will probably be the 5th SP behind Teheran/McCarthy/Folty/Newk and/or the long man in the BP until Gohara is ready.

Hopefully he doesn't pitch any meaningful innings.

After 3---

Astros 2-0, Braves 2 hits(both by Inciarte), 0 Es, 2 LOB, 0-1 w/RISP

Kazmir 3 IP, 4 hits, 2 ER, 1 BBs, 2 Ks

Sims in to start the 4th

Sims had a rough time

1st batter --GO 5-3
Next HR
Next DBL
Next HBP
Next single sharply to LF to load the bases
Ks the pitcher
Fisher with bases loaded--- LO 7

3-0 Astros mid 4th

Are we sure Fried is good? I keep seeing him ranked him in our system, but I've never really understood why. The only place he has been good in his minor league career is at Low A and a 26-inning stint in the Arizona Fall League.

I don't think he is even that. Probably won't make the team.

I'm going to guess he is the long man out of the BP most of the year as long as he's healthy. The other options like Sims and Fried have options and will be stashed in AAA.

Just curious what a few former braves are doing this spring

Matt Kemp 19AB .316 avg 3 HR 6 RBI 1.192 ops
Alex Wood 2-0 10.80 ERA 3.1 IP 4K 2.10 WHIP

Matt Adams 11AB .455 avg 0HR 1 RBI 1.227 OPS

Jim Johnson 0-0 2.25 ERA 4IP 2K 0.75 WHIP
Andrelton Simmons 7AB .000 AVG 0HR 1RBI .111OPS (must be hurt?)

I don't think I've ever called Fried good. I've detailed why I think he gets hammered despite throwing 93 with a plus curve and average change, but it doesn't seem like he's going to alter that fastball at all.

One poster here thinks "Fried emerges as a potential TOR candidate" this season though.

I'm skeptical.

If he and Melvin Upton go on for a career resurgence, it is proof God hates the Braves.

He has a good curve and a descent enough change to be effective. His problem is his fastball gets killed. He needs to do something to move. Toss his change enough to keep guys honest. I agree with scheff that a sinker could be lethal. He could still use the four seamer but just way less frequently.

Luiz Gohara (groin) could make his Grapefruit League debut on Sunday.

Gohara has been bothered by a groin strain for the past couple of weeks, but he pitched a pain-free live batting practice session on Thursday morning in Braves camp. "It felt really good, and my stuff was working really well, too," Gohara said after the workout. "I think after this, I'm just ready to go out and pitch in games." The big left-hander should be good to go when the Braves first need a fifth starter on April 11.
