GDT #36: May 11, 2014 Cubs (Jackson) @ Braves (Le Grand Harang)

Ok, so why give up a player with Heyward's value, to get a "true leadoff" hitter.

Michael Bourn was a true leadoff hitter, Heyward when he's on can run circles around Bourn. Heyward isn't even 25 yet... lol

For me the issue has nothing to do with age, but performance. When he came up we all thought he would be an MVP candidate at some point. Unless he makes some adjustments I don't see it. He stands to far off the plate and pull happy too. If we could find the right partner willing to do a 3 for 1 or 2 for 4 we'd be fools not to do it. No need in extending him in my opinion.

Who's the last right fielder we had that was worth keeping? Who was the last right fielder that played elite defense we had? Not talking about Francoeur because all he had was a throwing arm...

David Justice...Gary Sheffield...JD Drew...

We couldn't afford Sheffield at market value. We couldn't afford JD Drew at market value.

The Justice trade was almost 18 years ago.

So I guess finding an affordable right fielder who is as productive as Heyward isn't as easy as we thought...

We could have definitely afforded those two...Whether or not ownership wanted to pony up the doe, thats a different story..

We couldn't afford it.

Team gives McGuirk and JS the budget every year, that's that. Remember Liberty was pissed that we signed Santana without them knowing. Time Warner at the time ran the Braves almost the same way.
