GDT 4/10/22: Braves vs Reds - First Day Game

He had some hard hit balls, but he really is awful.

Replacing him with Acuña might be a net total of 7 wins.

Hate to nitpick, but isn't this a particularly important point for the metrics crowd?

Certainly not comparable players, but isn't this exactly why so many of them were unconcerned when Freeman struggled? His hard-hit rate hadn't changed, so he was just getting unlucky?

Keep hitting it hard - eventually it will find holes.

Insanely small sample, but Dickerson has been laughably unlucky to start the season (wOBA minus xwOBA):

Ozuna, Marcell .317 .283 .034
Olson, Matt .664 .641 .023
Swanson, Dansby .285 .306 -.021
d'Arnaud, Travis .327 .358 -.031
Duvall, Adam .224 .262 -.038
Riley, Austin .525 .570 -.045
Albies, Ozzie .218 .306 -.088
Rosario, Eddie .143 .271 -.128
Dickerson, Alex .070 .335 -.265

As the eye test has told us, the Braves hitters have largely been unlucky in the first 4 games.

Olson and Riley are crushing it, and everyone else has been mediocre with poor luck making the results awful.

That variance in luck is how a Top 5 team in the game goes 2-2 to open the season.

Dickerson has had some really solid stints in the majors and he’s a fine 4th OFer but he doesn’t need to be starting on a regular basis. He has really scorched the ball on occasion with nothing to show for it. Some of the fans are being a bit hard on him.
