GDT: 4/18 Braves @ Padres: Strider after getting chewed out

I was not knocking Elder at all.. Just he is only 23 and just in the league. He could be sent down to AAA to continue developing his game and be an option guy for real or fake injuries. I just don't know about a 7 man pen with a lot of our starters averaging 5-6 innings max.

For all of the "what the hell is going on with Strider" commentary, his numbers are still elite-elite and his 40.9 K% is above last season. I really think if he stays healthy, you're looking at the 2023 NL Cy Young. His walks are a slight concern but he "issued" two free bases last night that were absolutely strikeouts and one or two last game that were also not walks. If not, it might be Max Fried lmao

Ozzie is weird because he has an absymal chate rate but he is in the upper 74th percentile in Ks.

I think Ozzie is just Ozzie. somehow he will frustrate the crap out of us and we will hate him all season, but then we look at his WAR and he is sitting at 4.5 for the year... and then you love him all over again.

100%.. 2 of those walks were on the umps. I do think he was off. His change wasn't good or at least I didn't see any.. but he has the stuff to be off and still shut you down.

Agreed on at least 2 of the walks being on the ump. One guy he struck out twice before walking him

Ozzie has a legit 70 grade hit tool that allows him to make contact on awful pitches. However, just because he can make weak contact on bad pitches doesn't mean it's good to do so. He has all the tools required to post a .900+ OPS, but instead his poor approach limits him to something ~100 points lower than that. It's the most infuriating type of player to watch, in my opinion.

Strider has only a season's worth of starts so far in MLB. I think right now he is getting outs on pure stuff, and he will learn how to 'pitch' as time goes on. This will be a necessity as it it's certain his velo will decrease within the next 5 years. He will find that sweet spot between stuff and sequencing, and barring injury could win multiple Cy's.

I'd let him get some more AAA time, as it looks like he still needs to sharpen up the control a bit. He will also go through some dead arm period soon, and I'd rather see him do that at AAA.

No doubt. But it is nice to see that he is getting results down there after such a long layoff

Not me... I don't get upset with Ozzie. Ha. Nah, he's infuriating a little. To Encheffs unfortunate point, he does himself no justice at times. But yeah...I agree Matt. He will have another 4 WAR season.

When Strider masters his change up, he will be lethal. He can then pitch at 96 and work off his change and good slider. His start before this last one, I can remember 3 guys he K'd on what looked to be change ups versus his slider. How can you ever hit a change when you are trying to catch up to 98.

He also seems like a guy who will just one day decide he wants to try a curve ball and break it out randomly in a game.

The juiced ball sort of broke Ozzie. He had that year he hit all those wall scraper homeruns which are now being caught on the warning track.

He hit 30 homeruns in 2021. This “Ozzie was a 2019 juiced ball merchant” theory is such a fallacy.

Definitely favored the Padres last night, but I really feel like this is lowballing how bad that ump was last night.

Really? I thought ump called a good game. Imo, I think people are especially harsh with umpires. This is way better than the strikes zones back in the day.

See, I am fine with a strike zone that is an umps own.. but be consistant with it. Snell and other pitchers were getting calls that Strider wasn't.. heck even strider was getting calls on the next batter that wasn't as good as a pitch he call a ball on Soto. He was bad last night.

94% consistency is average.
