GDT 4/21- VINES: There is Dirt on the Porch!!!

One of the very few bad things about being an excellent club is the amount of times you're picked to play on Sunday Night Baseball.

Braves already have two more SNB telecasts lined up -- and in back to back weeks with @Mets and vs. Padres in May.

Anyone else get the impression that we just mailed this one in? Talk about a completely listless performance.

I don't at all. I don't think Riley and Olson have a good look on any ball at the moment and they're pressing...Robertson through 93 right passed Olson...he don't miss those. This team goes as Olson and Riley goes.

No. After the first inning, Lorenzen was outstanding and Yates was good. Every team is going to have a clunker every now and then

I only posted that because we got a ton of ball/strike calls in our favor and the Rangers tried to give us the game in the eighth inning and our body language seemed to say, "no thanks." As you as jsebe wrote, Riley and Olson have a huge say in the outcome of games and tonight they didn't say much at all.

No offense, but I think it's kind of ludicrous to say they said "no thanks" in those at bats. I certainly didn't sense that after seeing Olson's frustration after the eighth inning strikeout. This was just one of those nights. It happens to every team, no matter how good they are. Just chalk it up to that and don't play team psychologist.

No problem and I know bad games happen. What's the saying "even a great squad will lose at least 54 games in a season?" I just didn't sense the usual fire in our guys tonight...nothing more, nothing less.

Yeah, it's was just a tough night on the diamond. Happens on occasion.

FF wouldn't strike out 4 times on SNB... just saying

Speaking of Freddie, he's starting the season pretty cold, at least by his standards. Of course he did the same thing last year before having a huge May and a pretty epic 2nd half.

Vines seems like a pitcher who can can be good if allowed to pitch only 4 innings or bad if he is expected to go 5+. Unfortunately we have seen this movie before. We will continually watch him get batted around in the 5th and 6th inning rather than taking 4 innings from him. More specifically he probably should never face a third time through the batting order. He is a good candidate for using an opener. Especially if its a team that will stack left handed hitters.

I think you are over valuing him. He is exactly who he is.. a Quad A pitcher with middling stuff. you don't get to 26 in the minors with little to no MLB exposure and all of a sudden 'have something' Of course there are one offs that figure out control or add some MPH's.. but in general 26 year olds in the minors are just Quad A fillers. and the eye test doesn't disagree. He will stick around for a few years just because he is good enough to tease you but ultimately he just isn't that good. He doesn't have another pitch that helps his change. The cutter seems like it could work, but it got killed last year. His 4 seam is just awful so he just needs to show that pitch like 3-4 times a game. without uber control, he will never sniff success in the bigs.

I am not saying he is a great pitcher. Just that he can put up a decent ERA going 4 innings or two times through a lineup. If we have a choice between 4 innings and 1-2 runs or 5 innings and 4-5 runs we should take the 4 innings and be happy with that.
