GDT 4/4/23: Braves @ Cards - Max defense for Dodd

He wants an opt out somewhere in the deal, which is the holdup. AA doesnt do opt outs in contracts, so not sure that works for us either. Lineup with Reynolds would be literally unfair.

He might want an opt out because it is Pitt and he doesn't want to stay there for another 5 years with a crap team.

but he is an interesting contract case. He is controlled through his prime (30), so he is realistically going to get one big payday and then probably some middling ones to finish his career. But why would a team want to give him an opt out when they already control him til he is 30. If I am buying you arb years out, then a team is going to want a team option for at least his first FA year to limit their risk.

The report is that they were in agreement on the cash side of things, it all came down to the Pirates not being willing to provide the opt out.

That makes me think more that the deal does get done. If they were off on numbers and the opt out, then I probably feel different.

If he's being traded to us, there isn't an opt out issue to deal with. But if it came to extension time, I think he'd be more open to not having one if he's on an actual contender.

Agreed. If he was on a good team then the opt out is probably a non sticking point.

I mean, in theory, the player opt out is really for them to potentially make a bigger payday. And with his age, that might be a big motivator. But maybe playing for a winning team is a motivator for him.
