GDT 4/9/25: Braves vs Phillies - Murphy Moves Up

Let me prophesize what I expect from Schwellenbach this year. Take his stats last year. BABP about the same .279. K rate goes up slightly to 9.5 from 9.25. HR rate drops from 1.04 to under .5. Maybe even .3. BB rate goes down slightly from 1.62 to under 1.5. And ground ball rate goes from 41% to north of 50%. Calculate that all up and it adds up to a damn good pitcher. That doesnt mean every start will be lights out. Even the best get hit every now and then.

We may be the worst situational hitting team ever. For the last 2 years if we have men on base I have 0 faith we will get them in regardless of who is hitting. I know we won't stay this bad especially with Acuna and Strider coming back but the bullpen is gonna be a problem unless some guys step up. AA will go big at the deadline to try to make up for his lackluster offseason. And yes we will be in the playoff hunt.

I am sorry, but going big at the deadline to make up for not going big over the winter is worse than just staying pat and taking your medicine. It was known that the team needed pen help. I don't care what Zips said. The Braves lost two good relievers and filled them with a poo poo platter of shit.. So the strategy is to pay the deadline premium for a problem that could have been handled over the winter for less.. that is just a double fail and should expedite a GMs firing.

the only thing AA needs to go after this deadline is an outfielder. He at least tried to address that hole.. albeit with a cheater.. but he tried. anything else will just magnify how bad he is doing.

Gonna be star-spangled awesome when Luzardo beats Schwelly 1-0 tomorrow.

Maybe a rental OF, but Profar got years to go, unfortunately.

I wasn't saying go buy an OF.. He will be back this year actually and require a spot to play... and you might not have to worry about the playoffs at that point.

But to actually go out at the deadline and handle a situation that was a clear need at the beginning of the offseason is dumber than actually not addressing the situation in the offseason.

I could see a starter maybe getting added if the playoffs are viable. Losing Lopez was not known (was highly likely) this winter.

I know AA knew the pen was an issue.. he tried and got scared I guess and couldn't close any deals. btw Hoffman would look good right now.

Revenge of AA and Murphy...

Contreras...
0.1 fWAR (11 games)
.300 xwoba
74 wrc+

Murphy...
0.2 fWAR (2 games)
.442 xwoba
281 wrc+

Murphy on 16.2 fWAR pace for 162 games.

Sample size checks out for ample.

I would go get an outfielder if there's one to be had. We haven't even gotten to the part of the season where Harris misses a month or more.

AA has failed his last 2 tests - deadline last year and offseason this year. If he fails deadline this year, probably time to start thinking of moving on to someone else.

Basically if this is just going to be a shit season, I'd hope Profar can have solid production from July-September and then look to trade him in the offseason.

This is the content we can all get behind!! But it has been cooler in ATL so far.. so we have to see how he handles the 80+ degree nights.

I think if he comes back strong, then fans and the org are going to want to keep him and actually see a full season of Harris/Acuna/Profar OF.. Just like I hope to see a playoff run of healthy Sale/Strider/Schwelly.

Relief pitchers are relatively cheap at the deadline, as long as you aren't going for an elite closer (Hader, Chapman, or Scott trades). We got Iglesias for relatively free at the 2022 deadline. Same for Pierce Johnson in 2023.

But I am not defending AA for not addressing the BP. It was absolutely a major fail that has cost us at least 3 games so far this season. As I've said before, there were low cost signings available for proven quality relievers.
