GDT: 5/01/2018 Braves @ Mets (Rise of Soroka)

The 2015 draft was brilliant. I liked it from the start.

The results have obviously been very good. But I also liked the "template" they used, which I wish they had followed in subsequent drafts.

2016 looks pretty good too. Very little of that class has flamed out.

Since Soroka is 20 and Canadian, does this mean that the "cold weather pitchers develop slower" theory applied to Newk is disproved?

It will take a few years to know for sure, but as of now it looks to me that our 2015 will turn out to be much more productive than the 2016 and 2017 drafts.

Newcomb starting pitching in 2013 at Hartford college, right?

Greinke started pitching 6 months before he was drafted 6th overall out of high school. The Royals GM told his scouts he wanted the most MLB ready starting pitcher they could draft. He assumed it would be a college pitcher so he told his scouts to focus on college pitchers. They all came back and said Greinke was the most polished and MLB ready pitcher in the draft. Some people just take to it quicker than others. Probably why Greinke has not had any arm injuries so far.

You've done this before for newcomb and gohara, but I'm too lazy to look it up. Off the top of your head, do you remember how they stack up stuff wise?

From a "pure stuff" perspective, Soroka is clearly below the 2 LHers. The command is probably going to close that gap though.

In my mind, Newk's command issues limit him to a role like Oliver Perez...#4 or set up BP arm.

Gohara's poor conditioning makes him super volatile. He has the makings of a TOR guy, but may eat himself out of baseball.

What Soroka lacks in absolute upside, he makes up for in certainty. I would be shocked if he doesn't produce 20+ WAR over his MLB career with a few 3+ WAR seasons sprinkled in.

Thanks, and great work. If you keep working hard, you'll be able to scout pitching as well as thethe ;)
