GDT 5-31: MR. CHARLIE TOLD ME SO

I quit crying in my FF jersey this week. Again, Olson isn't the problem, but there's literally nothing you can base him being an upgrade over FF, yet

But was Olson ever supposed to be an immediate upgrade over Freeman? I thought the purpose of the trade and contract was it would be better for us during the life of the deal. So when Freeman is in the final years of his contract, we will be getting prime Olson.

Maybe, but I'd guess we were planning on them being equal. Olson was better last year

You are once again missing the obvious.

1) the dead baseball has ****ed up a lot of player evaluation and their numbers. Olson has been a flyball heavy/good hr per flyball guy. The new baseball has ****ed him a bit more than most

2) Olson's WRC+ is currently higher than Freeman's last year.

Olson's flyball % is down over 10%. Do the new balls cause that?

FF has .380 wOBA and .425 xwoba
Olson has .374 wOBA and .372 xwoba

Seems Olson is getting the results he should.

Again, Olson isn't the problem. All this started bc I reject that olson is having some sort of historic season. There are 4 NL 1b that have outperformed him, and hell, Matt Olson has outperformed this year's version

A 1 WAR difference isn’t some massive gap in value, especially when the majority of that is due to small sample baserunning and defensive value. We are talking about a couple doubles becoming home runs and a few more throws being up the line so he scores (baserunning is very luck driven).

FF is pacing 7.3 fWAR
Olson is pacing 3.8 fWAR

That's a pretty significant difference.

Goldy on pace for 9.0 fWAR, wow

ETA.. I expect FF and goldy to slow down and Olson to pick it up. I figure they'll all be pretty similar at the end

Maybe, but even the Hammer said for years, and I am paraphrasing. that average and RBI were more important to him than HR. Freddie puts the ball in play more making more opportunities for good things to happen.

It's a good thing we have more tools than batting average and rbi to determine the offensive worth of a player these days.

If we look at ZiPs which does the same thing you are trying to do but better (no offense, it’s better than what I can do too)

ROS WAR
Freeman 4.2 WAR
Olson 3.8 WAR

A 0.4 WAR difference is effectively a rounding difference. These two are effectively the same player.

I wasnt predicting that would be the fWAR for any of those guys. That's just their current pace. The current pace is an accurate snap shot of how they compare at the moment. I even added that I figure they'll all be similar at the end.
