GDT 6/11: pirates @ braves

I'm still very much on the Foltynewicz hype-train, but I have to think the bone-spurs are a bigger issue than either he or the team is allowing. Would help account for why his slider is so lacking this season.

I think I'm more on the side of "Folty isn't that good of a pitcher.

I mean, it's not like he's that young. He'll be 28 in October (for perspective, Julio is 28).

This is his 5th season with the Braves. His fWAR in those seasons:

2015 - 0
2016 - 1.4
2017 - 1.6
2018 - 3.8
2019 - -0.5

I think it's more likely last year was the outlier, and his true talent level is closer to a 1.5-2 win pitcher.

I think it’s a little of both. I think last year may end up being his best year, but he is also dealing with a bone chip that makes him worse than normal.

How big of a deal it it to get those removed?

xwOBA largely agrees with you, and 2018 may have been peak Folty.

Some of our less intelligent board members wanted to extend Folty after last season despite the fact the Braves already control the entirety of his 20s.

The Rays model for dealing with pitchers suggests the Braves should trade Folty either this coming offseason or the 2020 trade deadline if they can find a team still dreaming on his upside.

I imagine he'd still fetch a nice return due his fastball... similar to Archer

He has never been one to stay healthy...even last year he had a few forearm problems.

Texas maybe interested in a Minor deal?
