GDT 6/14/22: Braves @ Gnats - Win it for Ozzie

We are about to see why many of us were screaming for an upgrade to the bench. Maybe Arcia will prove us wrong.

I think waiting till the deadline is actually a great way to improve the bench as opposed to handing out money to someone who may or may not be any good at the start of the season.

Bench players cost virtually nothing at the deadline - Especially if they carry 1-2M in salary pro-rated.

And bench players simply do not play for the braves

boy this feels like a trap game.. pitcher making MLB debut.. our ace on the bump.. team hitting bombs like last year... Is this where some no name rookie shuts our **** down.

Anything can happen of course but this kid had a 5.25 FIP in AAA - Braves offense is on ****ing fire right now

The Braves would have massively benefitted with a better bench. How many wasted at bats were given to Heredia and Demerritte?

When you say massively what are you talking about in terms of wins and losses?

Demerritte, Heredia and Dickerson are a combined -1.2 WAR below replacement. So even replacement level brings in an extra win. A good bench player maybe adds a win. Also factor in Duvall’s slow start that’s possibly related to playing CF, Ozuna playing defense, etc. and you could easily argue a good bench would have been worth 2-3 wins.

Just to add.

You are creating a false choice. You can invest in the bench before the season and at the deadline.

I think you have better information to select the right person at the deadline.

My philosophy remains the same. Braves were easily good enough to be a playoff team. Its about building the best team for the playoffs so I want to hold as much as reasonably possible for the deadline to get the biggest upgrade possible.

I think this is spot on and is the best reasoning to not spend on the bench.

I suppose my hope is that if Snit had a solid guy on the bench maybe he would play him 2-3 games per week and rotate guys guys through days off to keep them all fresh. Apparently that won't ever be in the plans for this team though.

So now Arcia is thrust into an everyday role and hasn't played since....checks FG...6/3.
