GDT 6/15/22: Braves @ Gnats - Contreras Behind the Dish

Hope he does for our sake....

The incredible thing about winning 14 in a row is that we haven't had a blow up game. No matter the opponent, usually something happens and you lose a game or two over that stretch. Braves starting pitching has bent a little bit recently, but the offense was there to pick them up.

The pitching has been pretty solid this run, only giving up 2.9 runs per... but you are right, the offense has been lit scoring 7.2 runs per game.

Odd considering we are supposed to have weak starting pitching that AA screwed up on by not spending money in the offseason....

Bottom line is the Braves are playing well and we are the defending champs. As long as we play well it doesn't matter who is on the other side of the field.

I tell you one thing, I greatly enjoy Emma and the Elephant, but the broom that has been showing up a couple of times a week is damn fine to see on a regular basis too. A fella could get mighty used to that…

Among starters with 60 innings Morton has the 13th worst FIP. Anderson is the 18th worst. If you want to just go by ERA then Morton is the 5th worst and Anderson the 11th worst. That's an issue whether you want to believe it or not. The Braves pitching has been great outside of that.

But those guys were not in question at the start of the year and I fully believe Morton is going to be fine by seasons end.

Concerned about Anderson but we have Ynoa/Soroka/Muller in reserve waiting.

This last pass through the rotation against the Pirates and Nationals the starters have given up :

Strider: 2 ER
Fried: 4 ER
Anderson: 4 ER
Wright: 3 ER
Morton 4 ER

Seeing that in writing now makes you appreciate the offense taking off!

Anderson has been in question since he got to the majors. Morton not so much but he is 38 coming off of a broken leg so maybe he should have been. His walks are way up and his HR/9 are the highest in a decade. IMO this points to the beginning of the end for him. It happens.

I think Morton still has more in the tank. I do agree on Anderson though. His ceiling looks to be a middle of the rotation starter.

Marcell...
K rate at career rate, 21.2
Bb rate lower than career, 6.2 (career 7.9)
Iso at career rate, .188
Xwoba .362, wOBA .306
Babip .251 (career .311)

Marcell is just fine.

I think there were plenty who said a pitcher who is almost 40 coming off an injury should be a question mark. No one says we need more pitching because of X and Y pitchers.. it is because all pitchers are capable of being questions... You need 10 starters, at least, to make it through the year. Not because Elder sucks, or Anderson regressed, but because Fried will get hurt or Morton will be bad or a million other reasons.

The offense will carry us to the playoffs.

Fried/Morton/Wright/Strider/Bullpen will bring home another title

I am telling you, Soroka's name will be in there somehow. I just feel like he is going to come back like gangbusters. I actually worry about Strider as a starter still. He needs that 3rd pitch. I think he threw a few changes last night so hopefully that is a sign he is trying it out more.

I could see Strider being pushed to the pen by a combination of Soroka and an innings limit.

I wouldn't mind that at all but if the innings limit wasn't a thing I think Strider never leaves the rotation. That fastball is amazing and he will throw it in the zone (but not in the heart of it).

I keep seeing and hearing about the Mets getting two “big weapons” back soon. Surely that fanbase knows how injury-plagued deGrom has been since 2020. How can you trust him? Scherzer has been really good, but will he get another dead arm by September/October?

The Braves have already won more games in June than they did in May, and already are guaranteed a winning record in June... on June 15th. They are ten games above .500 for the first time this season - they got to ten games over .500 for the first time last season on August 21st. That was in the midst of a very similar 16-2 streak, taking them from 52-55 to 68-57. The biggest difference is that they gained 9.5 games in the division on that run, while in this one, only 6.5 so far. They had actually gained 11 games on the Mets in that span, who were already in third place by the end of it.

The Braves have won 14 straight for the first time this year.. I can't remember the last 14 game win streak, but it is cool to watch.. Now we just need to focus and hopefully pass the longest winning streak of the year..whatever that is..

I would love to get Scherzer and DeGrom back. That is a scary team if they are healthy... especially in the playoffs.

So how many PA does it take to declare Contreras, Harris, and Arcia as real? Harris and Arcia are the ones we really need to know about since the break is a little over a month away
