GDT 6/19 BRAVES dare to dream of SWEEP vs Mets

The debate on whether or not Teheran is an ace is one of the most ridiculous ones we engage in. My answer: Who cares? The guy is a very good pitcher and that's good enough for me.

Just to pull a comparison out. Mention Arrieta's name these days and there's more cream in some guys' shorts than there is in the dairy case at the local supermarket. But let's roll back the clock. When Arrieta was 25, he had a 1.458 WHIP and 1.58 K/BB while going 10-8 with a 5.05 ERA for the Orioles. He has certainly turned it around. But if Arrieta can reach the levels he's reached, what's to say Teheran cannot. Julio needs to keep the ball in the park and even if he does that, he may never reach unquestioned ace status. But the guy can pitch.

Trade him or keep him? I can see both sides of the question, but if they trade him, they better get a frickin' haul.

Joe said it best doesn't really matter but he is our ace.

Things like this are why we don't want them losing 120 games. My soul was stirred after reading these.

well, I don't have a soul, and nothing I read there seemed to give any legit reason for trying to be merely awful instead of historically awful.

Nah. He only struck out seven in nine innings today. He's just lucky to keep the ball in the yard.

It is starting to look like we are merely awful. Or maybe not even that.

I look at the team, and I still see a lot of awful. Some potential there sure, but we are sorely missing power, the pen is a coin flip (hell as is most of the rotation)

We may win some games here and there, but with our banked record , it's gonna be tough to win more than 60

Someone else may have heard/posted this, but it's a helluva stat: first one-hitter vs the Mets since Tony Cloninger in 1965.

No doubt, but with improved performance from a number of guys in both the Majors and minors, the number of gaping holes seems to me moving from insurmountable to potentially doable. Not there yet of course, but seeing glimpses of potential.

This is the kind of progress many were hoping to see during the season. Took a while, but some of these guys are starting to grow up.

That's why i think if they keep Teheran, move Neck for anything, buy Cespedes and Ramos/Castro and see if they can work Olivera back in at 3b, we could be wildcard contenders next year. It would take a lot of things going right, and Olivera might crash and burn, but It's possible.

Everyone says they want to sell high but it's easy to say when we should have sold with hindsight. In the moment it's not so clear. Is Julio becoming a dominant ace or is this his peak value? Let's not forget he is just entering his physical prime.

In entertaining trade offers we should value Julion as a 3 WAR player. And we should be looking to clearly win the trade.

The one thing that is at peak value is his contract situation which should be a very big appeal to any team.

If we treat him as a 3 WAR player then he will provide estimated $78m in excess value over the life of the deal, meaning we need to get $80m+ back if it's an overpay. That means big names coming back.

The Twins look like they are in for the long haul and the Phillies' collapse I predicted may be beginning. I foresee a yuge sell-off by the Reds (and maybe the Padres), which would put them on our heels as well.

The Braves will be sellers too.. how big of sellers will determine how far they fall.

Yup. He's on pace to break 3 WAR for the second time in three years. It is not an outlandish valuation.

But outside of Teheran, who could be sold that would really put a dent in W/L?

There is Freddie. Who we have been told is not going anywhere.

Inciarte hasn't had a strong first half, but is probably our next best player. I think we hold on to him unless some team is willing to accept a valuation based upon his 2014-15 production.

Viz would be a bit of a loss and I suspect is more likely to be traded than Teheran.

Wisler has pitched well for stretches, but I think he is the type of player we are trying to build around.

Flowers has played decently and it would hurt to cede even more playing time to AJ.

The rest are flotsam and jetsam. Even guys with established careers like Markakis and Aybar. They are no longer the players they once were.

Not sure SD actually has a ton to sell other than Myers and Kemp, and the latter may not be moveable.
