GDT 6/ 8Braves vs A's: Just keep winning

Austin Riley is in the upper 2% of average exit velocity.

Any parents here know how tough those first few weeks are with a newborn. Riley is back to being a stud. Its time to give him an extention.

I've seen enough at this point to approach him with an extension. Curious what Riley would be looking for.

Yeah i'd try to extend Riley as well, not even sure what the parameters of a deal would even look like to have him sign.

Is Alvarez a good comp? They were similar service time. He got 6 years / 115 million.

Alvarez is the better hitter but Riley offers positional value.

Gotta admit, this board is much more pleasurable to read when the team is slowly but surely chasing down the 7 trainers …. Gonna be a fun summer.

Riley is currently making $4M in his age 25 season, and is controlled through 2025…his age 28 season.

A quick estimate for his next 3 arb seasons is something like $35M. If I’m Riley, I’m either looking for guaranteed $35M over the arb years in exchange for a single team option over my age 29 season, or something that approximates the deal I think I’d get as a 29 year old FA.

The first deal would be something like 3/35 with a $20M option that has a $5M buyout.

The second deal would be something like 8/150, covering my 3 arb years plus the 5 year deal I think I’d get as a FA.

If I’m AA I’d pass on the 8 year deal Riley wants, and try to get as many FA options as possible in exchange for guaranteeing the arb years.

Thanks.
I love the ARB plan. He's going to want to get onto the FA market before 30, that is the magic number. So the 8/35 + 20 million option makes a lot of sense. I love team options so I'd add them on even if they are crazy, given we do not know what the market will be. Like 8/35 +20 million option, next year 30 million option, next year 35 million option... Just give me the option to have a one year deal on an impact bat.

Austin comes across as a good old boy family man. So it is possible he could push for the long deal to stay in the hunting/fishing area of the country and secure his family. Olson was 8/168 but Olson was closer to FA and has done more IMO. Riley is at a more premium position but there are some concerns if the can stay there. I think he'd want to start at 10/200 and just say I'll retire a Brave. AA likely chokes on the years and the cash.
