Papelbon is one of best closers as far as control. He wasn't throwing a pass ball. If TLS bunts, Simmons never sees a strike. It's baseball 101

If it's the 3rd inning I would agree with that. But with a pinch hitter looming after Simmons it is not a guarantee that they walk Simmons. Simmons was batting only 250 going into that at bat.

It's the bottom of the ninth. That would mean they would have to either bring the IF or just concede the tying run for an out..the game winning run is in scoring position. Any manger would walk to set up the DP.
