The speed that breaks up a double play is the batter not the runner at first. I would say Gattis could break up a DP better than Schafer due to his size.

So when Simmons just flipped to second and Brown was safe and Ruiz was out at first you would say Ruiz prevented the DP? I am not defending Fredi's decision, I didn't like it either, but you asked for the reason and I gave it to you. Schafer would get to 2b quicker than the bear, quicker he gets to second the greater chance of being safe.

Justin Upton is a fast runner. Unlikely he hits into a DP. Either way, it's ridiculously dumb to waste a bench player like that in extra innings.
