GDT 7/16/19: Another round for the bar

We should still be patient with Wilson because of his age but at some point he will need to be transitioned to the pen. Could be a dynamite 2 inning reliever.

I dunno. I hope he’s part of our package for a SP. He doesn’t look impressive to me at all. Not really sure why we keep going back to him. I’d have much rather seen Touki or Wright get the start.

Never has. Unless he develops another plus pitch he never will.

I really don’t understand how a SP with only 2 pitches, with neither of them being plus-plus, gets to be so highly regarded. He’s a reliever, plain and simple.

Agreed. That said, if someone is willing to sell high and include him as a focal point of a package, it's totally worth it. Either way, I think he's a legit reliever so he's a valuable piece, just not the terrific SP some seem to think.

I'm not sure why he won't be utilized there right now. I think the can be a good guy for us to ride down the stretch for 3-6 out stints. Little question he'd be one of our better options. He can still go back to starting next year.

Why does our front office keep giving him a shot in our starting rotation with all results, both on the big league team and minor league roster, being poor? It’s like they keep shoving a round peg in a square hole. Just make him a reliever and be done with it.

Well his minor league numbers are pretty good, so....

I agree. He has a big straight fb and fringe peripherals if I recall enscheff’s post correctly. Consistent with general coverage of him I think. Strike thrower though.

He’s on the list of guys I would trade for impact players with remaining control.

Pretty tough to do. I guess there have been guys who have made it work for a bit. J.A. Happ is the first who comes to mind.

Braves have been pretty good about taking someone like him and teaching him a change to get him to brink of the majors, but those guys have usually fizzled out there.

Even someone like Weigel has/had the slider billed as a quality second.

I don't know. maybe he'd slot better in a pen role than say Touki (who could then stretch back out in AAA), but RH middle relief is not necessarily the Braves biggest need.

Kinda interesting to give markakis the day off instead of Riley with rhp

Because someone needs to take these starts. Teams need 8-10 SPs every year, and having Wilson as the 8th SP option is a good thing.

As others have pointed out, he's a bit too young to shove in the BP now since even MOR SPs are more valuable than all but the most dominant BP guys. Guys like Wilson and Touki and Newk are very likely to end up in the BP, but not when they are/were 21. Wilson is the youngest current SP in MLB, so it makes sense to give him a few more shots.

In the end I agree, he is a BP arm...been saying it for over a year now.

Isn't it against the laws of god and man to put a lineup in the previous day's GDT? I'm concerned.
