GDT: 7/27 Braves @ Rays

we'll always have that one magical year that Folty showed what he could be. that was fun. this is not. wonder if we'll ever get the full story.

The fact that the team dumped Folty so quick instead of sending him to the DL with some phantom strain makes me wonder how well he was liked. If he was a pillar of the clubhouse I think they might have tried to see if they could fix what's wrong. The fact they dumped him combined with his tendency to lose his cool on the mound makes me think the team was tired of him.

Yeah he’ll end up somewhere for sure. Too much talent for some club to not take a flier on. Hopefully he figures it out

If his velo is what it is now...he is done. If the Braves did what they did so quickly, I doubt there is little chance he will even be in the league much longer.

I was inkling the same point in my post. Nothing against Foltynewicz but there are players--most often pitchers--whose on-field behavior can make the rest of the team think "here we go again." He's super-intense and really hard on himself and while some fans appreciate that, it can be difficult to play next to it.

Or, it could be just be a loss of velocity.

The dramatic weight loss (see pictures posted earlier in topic) leads me to believe there are far deeper emotional problems or physical problems involved. Family problems come to mind first. Of course, his tendency to "blow up" on the mound could be an indication of even deeper emotional problems maybe caused in early childhood.

He didnt have any value then. If you wanted to trade him, it was after the 2018 season.

No. He had value if for not but potential alone. But, the decision was made to keep him as a cornerstone of the future. That has failed miserably. Face it. They went with a "reload" strategy. Some has worked. A lot has not. Folty definitely didn't work.

i agree with what many others, including you, said tho that JUST a loss of velocity wouldn't cause them to DFA him. there's gotta be more to this story.

they could've traded him, sure. he had some value. not much, tho. i don't think they would have received much in return.
keeping him and having him be your ace on the 2018 division champ team is probably more valuable than anything they would have received.
trading him would have been defensible but without knowing what was offered, what's the use in saying it definitely should have been done?

Jesus. Take a night off and **** hits the fan. Folty is gone!!! WTF. I haven’t seen him this year but that pic in this thread is scary. Dude looks like some of my old coke addict friends. They just started disappearing physically then they hit meth. Man I hope he is alright in the head.

The only reason I think it might NOT be drugs is that you'd think the Braves would get him help rather than just straight DFA him. But maybe they tried.

Nah. Trading every possible player in that era is the only thing that would of made Harry happy. Sure, we wouldn't have had the last two divisional titles but think of the future!

I suspect we will hear the other half of the reason Folty was DFAd soon. There is simply no baseball-only reason to dump a guy this soon.

You certainly don't dump a former All Star with remaining control based on a 60 game fake season, IMO.

You wouldn't even do that if you thought he was injured.

I think this was possibly an ongoing problem over the last few years (be it drugs or something else). They likely dealt with the same thing last year and he is out of chances.

Given his personality type and they way he looks...drug abuse is a definite possibility. I hope not. If they cut ties with him with a year of control left after this year....he’s in really bad shape.

It reminds me of how quickly they cut Gohora. We were like “But...his potential!!”...they knew he was done.

Or Boston - really scary to think, but the current version of Folty might be their 3rd best "healthy" SP at the moment.

His current velocity is pretty much the same as Boston's current number three, former Braves' prospect Ryan Weber. Of course, the difference is Weber never threw mid-90s.
