Wait wait wait...Snitker is starting Duvall against a righty? You mean he doesn’t know he should be platooned with Joyce? Are we really going to have to go through this again?

You have to be ****ing with me.

Somebody please tell me that Snitker is just trying to get Duvall’s feet wet in the majors again...or something.

His career splits are pretty even. This year in AAA he has a tremendous split, but he's still got an .855 OPS vs. righties. I dont see the big deal.

Yeah- I don't see the big deal here either.
Duvall has been slumming in AAA all year doing really well. I like the idea of letting him start his game up this year.

The guy who wasn’t good enough to make the MLB team is now starting without the platoon advantage over the guy who was good enough to make the MLB team and would have the platoon advantage today.

I was all for giving Snit a mulligan now that he has access to better data, but he has to go.

The big deal is there is a clearly correct platoon scenario to be used with the current roster.

It's probably one of those welcome back to the bigs starts.

If in a week Snit is still pulling this **** we all need to send complaints to Braves fanmail or tweet AA

I think its actually the Braves themselves that think that Duvall can't be a part-time player, they think that he has to be an everyday player that is fed tons of at bats, as this is not a token start. DOB said he's going to get the majority of the starts at least through the end of July.

Joyce and Duvall need to be platooned, but does anyone else think that Duvall/Joyce platoon could actually represent an upgrade over Markakis given how much better Duvall is defensively? I mean, Markakis has been really bad this year with a UZR/150 of -11.2.

Duvall is a really good defensive corner outfielder. If he can get back to being a .245/.305/.480 hitter like he was with the Reds, or better if he is platooned properly, then I think we may actually get better with him in the lineup vs lefties.

Joyce has been great in his limited time, but I'm not sure how he is going to hold up as the strong side of a platoon. He isn't as good defensively as Duvall is, but he's still probably better than Markakis at this stage of their career. I don't think Joyce is going to maintain .850 OPS playing more often, but even if he regresses back down to a ~.780 OPS that would be fine.

I hate that Markakis got hurt, but I'm not so sure that our starting lineup isn't better with a properly deployed platoon of Joyce and Duvall. The main thing that is hurt is our depth.

While “everyday only player” isn’t something I’ve seen any research done in the public sphere, this theory does make some roster decisions line up a bit...especially why Duvall was left in AAA so long.

If the Braves have identified some way to determine that Duvall needs regular PAs, then things start to make sense. It’s certainly grasping at straws, but it’s the only explanation other than “Snits an idiot and the FO hates Duvall”.

There is a secondary consideration as the roster is currently configured, which is if you start Inciarte and Joyce there is no lefty bat on the bench for a high leverage situation. I suppose McCann is a last ditch option when he is on the bench but Snit is pretty careful about using his second catcher.

What might end up making the most sense is Joyce/Duvall splitting PT 50-50 and same with Inciarte/Riley but taking care to have one lefty hitter on the bench. When the other team has a lefty going play both Duvall and Riley obviously.

I concur. Duvall is one of those guys who probably has to play every day to be much good. Now, he just has to prove he's good enough to play every day. As I said in the other thread, let's roll the dice. That said, the platoon advantage would clearly be with playing Joyce.

Duvall has two homers and 5 RBI's in only 6 AB's against Eflin, hitting .667 overall in those ab's. So I cannot question starting Duvall vs this righty.
