GDT 7/29/22: Braves vs Diamondbacks - Knock that Bum outta the game

How many more years would the Braves have MadBum signed had they given him 6 years like that one fool who used to post here wanted?

He’s had an ok season and is throwing as hard as he has for four seasons. Get him on a good team and he’d do even better. “Only” making 17 per year and when I wanted him jt was for a trade with Arizona picking up a small part of the salary since it looked like they needed to dump him.

It is still nuts to me how Riley has developed as a hitter. I mean dude is a ~.300 hitter with crazy power. That had to be like a 99.5 percentile ceiling for him. He was a freaking guess hitter at one point! You would think his walk rate will increase more and more as he gets older and pitchers start pitching around him more.

Good thing we didn’t listen to one particular guy who basically was willing to throw away a mvp type player for nothing.

WHOOPS!

“ Austin Riley: His BABIP-fueled .900 OPS at AA as a 20 year old may fool a team into thinking he is a long term answer at 3B”

That’s mvp contender Austin Riley.

Yeah, this guy should criticize others for getting some things wrong.

“ Fried and Sims might hold more value to a team like the Rays who value cheap MLB-ready guys more than other clubs (the A's meet that description as well). One of them plus Matt Adams might be enough to cover about half the cost of acquiring Odorizzi.”

That’s CY young contender and six shutout innings in the deciding World Series game max fried. Maybe we could have gotten half of the trade value for Odorizzi if we included Fried.

Sure, this is a guy that has any leg to stand on when criticizing others for getting a player evaluation wrong.

"Acuna is getting lucky, just like CJ did when he batted .321 and won a batting title. He is unlikely to get lucky at the MLB level over an extended period of time. He will settle in around .300-.320 just like everyone else, and when he does, he won't be within shouting distance of the 1.000 OPS he is posting in AAA...more like low .700s in 2018." -Enscheff 8/25/17

And now the true kicker. But please tell me again how I was dumb for thinking Newcomb would be a very good pitcher. An evaluation like that should get ridiculed!

How do we know he was a pure guess hitter. I mean everyone is a guess hitter to an extent. But a rookie getting fooled on major league sliders is not a pure guess hitter. Riley got better every level he repeated. Maybe he was a guy that just needed to see a league (quality of pitches for league) to get comfortable. Maybe the ‘guess hitter’ was our own evaluation of the kid on this board and was wrong.

I’m not sure what’s more fascinating: That Enscheff said these things or that you either saved them or went back and found them.

Its on the first page of the pessimists forum. It was bumped a year ago to laugh at the BL for something else but there were some gems from the guy that never gets anything wrong and criticizes other for getting things wrong.

I once endorsed the suggestion of including Freeman in a trade for Stanton when he was still going by Mike. Also wasn’t opposed to including Riley in a trade for Ramirez or Lindor.

I just thought it was part of the rules of engagement to say bold and brash things on a message board and generally present as someone who thinks they know how to manage a major league team and clubhouse over 162 games and in the postseason more than the people who actually do it and succeed at it.

It certainly is what its intended to be. EVERYONE gets things hilariously wrong over a long enough time frame.

I dont think Riley for Jose Ramirez is that crazy still. Jose Ramirez is an insanely good player, just no one thought Riley would turn into a superstar. And he's 5 years younger to boot.

Point is, I’m glad we didn’t give up on him when he couldn’t lay off the low and away slider to save his life.
