GDT 7/4/19: Fireworks on the 4th

I feel terrible for Soroka to not get the record after getting all of those runs of support and settling in but managers can’t let feelings get involved when making long-term rational decisions but I’m not a manager. :Gasp:

Yeah the Phillies are toast. They tried to compete too soon and it's probably going to doom them to mediocrity for a long time. Really hope they trade some prospects in an attempt to save the season.

I honestly think we could look back on this season like we do the steroid era numbers.Brady Anderson hitting 50 bombs, Javy with over 40 etc.
I think you could have an extra 5-10 homeruns a player just because of the balls.
I enjoy offense but this is pretty crazy.
Pete Alonso is on pace for 50 plus, Kel Marte is a thing, hell even Freedie has surpassed his total from last season.
Yet MLB acts as there hasn’t been a change in the way the ball plays haha

To be fair to them they have had a lot of injuries.
Mccutchen was a bit loss for them. Herrera as well. A lot of pen injuries as well.

I too hope they overpay for some pen rentals.

We've had injuries too. Ender has been down a while. Viz and ODay messed up the pen. Gausman in the rotation. Folty and Minter still haven't figured things out after their injuries this spring.

The difference is depth. The Braves had guys like Riley and Fried step up.

I think another thing that is hard to quantify in this advanced stat era is the chemistry of the clubhouse, that leads to attitude (I will pick you up), that leads to clutchness, that leads to team success, that leads to chemistry, that leads to attitude...you get it.

Philly decided to build on advanced stats (from the management down to the individual players). There are many reasons why several key free agents picked to play somewhere else and they ended up signing players just like tier MO.

Good players but "ME first players" across the board. Think of the key offensive players on their team. (Harper, Realmuto, Herrera, Mccutch (to a lesser degree)) have never been know as team first players. The results, better statistical players than last but the same results.

Compare to who AA signed this year. What is Snitker known for (clubhouse)? What is the constant talk about team (Acuna, Albies, Carmargo, Swanson)? What is Freeman's main attitude about resigning? What are McCain & Markakis known for (except being old and past their prime)?

that's the thing...we have the means to evaluate the value of pitchers and hitters without resort to counting stats like home runs that are influenced by exogenous factors

Losing Herrera is a net positive. He sucks.

They lost McCutchen, but they added Bruce and Kingery to their lineup who have both hit like Babe Ruth since joining.

They’re just not a very good team. Better than last year because they actually have an offense and slightly improved defense, but their pitching and depth was always their biggest issue and it has reared its ugly head.

Yeah...I’ve never heard of Realmuto and McCutchen not being “team first” guys.

The Braves also have built their team with advanced stats since AA took over. There are two key differences:

1. The Braves have a lot more talent and depth than the Phillies.

2. AA is better at using analytics than whoever is running the Phillies. The Phillies say they’re analytically driven, but then they sign Santana to an absurd deal and then stick him at 1st and Hoskins in left cratering their defense. That’s just one example.

In short, using analytics is one of the reasons the Braves are better than the Phillies, not the other way around.

I've used the analogy before, but the Phillies' front office was like a kid collecting baseball cards. They can say it was all about analytics, but the whole is clearly less than the sum of the parts. I think losing Herrera is, while not huge, a pretty big hit. He's not a Gold Glover by any means, but having him in CF would free up Kingery to move around the diamond. Losing McCutchen also hurt. But injuries are a part of the game and when you have Roman Quinn playing as much as he is, that's a huge dropoff.

I have heard Segura and Harper not being team first.

Chemistry tends to be overrated. Chemistry won't make a team without talent suddenly good. However, it can make a talented team bad. In any workplace cancers will sap the productivity of the whole group.
 
I can see the elephant in the room not putting up to snuff numbers and getting run from games (don’t think it’s happened in a while, but it was a thing early on) as by far the highest paid Philly getting old.
