GDT 7/5/22: Braves vs Cards - Gosselin gets another start

Is Jay Jackson really a realistic guy to have on a postseason roster? Honestly, if O'Day doesn't really put together a strong run of good pitching, I wouldn't let him stand in the way of an upgrade. Considering half this board loses its **** every time Snit puts him in a close game, that tells you about all you need to know. We're making some assumptions on Yates and Soroka, and Matzek's arm may simply be tired from the postseason stretch last year. AA is in a position of not having a ton of pressure to make such a deal, so I wouldn't try to force it by overpaying with a big asset.

As for the extra bat part, I'm thinking it would likely have to be a creative move where we trade Rosario or Ozuna and eat some of the salary. Not likely to find a willing partner, but who knows.

Standing pat has very rarely ever worked out.

The pen has been outstanding. If it ain't broke...

I'm pretty sure we will see a 2b/OF type addition

Jansen
Minter
Matzek
Strider
Mcugh
Smith
Yates
O-day

I don't see where we have room for another bullpen arm. I think he will grab a guy like you suggest but I just don't see where he fits in and I hope we don't give up a significant asset for one.

Ahh, the good old "list of players to gawk at assuming 100% perfect health and performance".

Glad to see it make a comeback!

The reality is:

Jansen is on the DL.
Matzek isn't back to full strength.
Smith is a walking heart attack.
Yates hasn't thrown a pitch in years.
Strider is likely a game 4 SP.
DOD and McHugh are decidedly mediocre.

So yeah, AA may want to grab a BP arm if he can, probably a high leverage RHP.

It's pretty remarkable.

The Braves have 9 relievers (with Strider moving to the rotation) with at least 10 innings. Only two of them (Matzek and Smith) have FIP's over 3.35

O'Day and Stephens have both pitched well but are either old or pretty inexperienced. Both are making next to nothing and if the pen is going to be upgraded it's likely going to be at their expense. I know we could have Yates and Soroka coming back. But it's never a bad idea to add good pitching. You can never have enough. But our pen has been flat-out dominant. 4.5 fWAR leads the majors by a good margin for a teams relief core.

I understand the current desire for a 2B/OF type. But we don't know Albies timeline and if he comes back when the 60 day DL trip is up that's in mid August. So we may end up giving up something of value for a player who has not much of a path to at bats at 2B or OF now that Rosario is back.

I agree with every point you make except

How is McHugh mediocre?

Acuna RF
Swanson SS
Olson 1B
Riley 3B
Ozuna DH
Rosario LF
Contreras C
Gosselin 2B
Harris II CF

Anderson P

Sometimes Snit accidentally spaces out the LHHs correctly so a single LHP can neuter 2 of them in 1 single 3 batter stretch. This was one of those lucky lineup days.

Unfortunately, he couldn't pull it off 2 days in a row.
