GDT 7/6/14: ARZ (Miley) vs. ATL (Wood): Seeking Another Sweep

I think Freddie/Justin/Jason going 1/10 with 2 BBs is more to blame. The lineup just didn't produce. I'm all for jumping on Fredi, and I know he made some mistakes. But you need your big bats to produce, period. No one did today. It happens.

Yeah, the offense didnt produce.

Justin puts a ball in play in the 1st, we might be going to extras.

Or if Jason gets a hit with RISP as well.

Scoring 1 run isnt going to win you many games.

It's technically a 1-yr extension.

He was under control for 2 more years after, just an option year that may not be picked up.

Tie to him when he may deserve to get DFA. There was just of reason to lock into a contract with him.

Well, the contract is tradeable, unlike Uggla's.

But i woulda just played it out year by year

Jeff Samardjiza WAS going to be selected to the all-star game over Julio Teheran until he was traded... that's absurd. He's not been as good as Teheran.

The biggest play in the game (well, besides walking the freaking pitcher and actually pitching to their best hitter when there was two outs...) was Justin Upton not getting Simmons in during the first. That killed us from the beginning.

So, BJ had an 0fer today and looked bad doing it. At what point would you pull the plug on him leading off?

I personally would have never had him their in the first place, and we all know Fredi will be very slow to make the change and bump him back down in the line up.

A lot more than one bad game. We all know better than that.

I don't mind BJ being leadoff for the time being. Anywhere else, and IMO the "bad BJ" starts affecting what the batter before him sees during their at-bat.

If I was his manager, I would try to summon the managerial spirits of John McGraw, Fred Haney, and Walt Alston in an attempt to convince him that "ninth is the new lead off." Short of that, and with the same/similar setup as this year's Braves, I'd put him leadoff as well.

Here's another question. Is this really a hot streak for BJ, or is he regressing towards his mean after being very bad for a year plus? His .313 OBP and .457 SLG during the last 12 games or so is right around where he was in the four seasons prior to coming to Atlanta.

If he gets back to the player he was for the Rays, we're in great shape.

That's my idea for BJ, bat him 9th. When he gets on it's like he's a leadoff hitter. My lineup would be

Jason
Justin
Freeman
Gattis
TLS
Johnson
Simmons (Simmons is way better infront of the pitcher than Johnson)
P
BJ

That way Bossman doesn't get the most PA on the team. THat's usually a smart idea.

If BJ just has to bat lead-off, this would be my ideal lineup.

BJ
Heyward
Justin
Freeman
Gattis
Johnson
La Stella
Simmons

Heyward does seem to thrive better at the top of the order but is that really good for him long term?

Heyward's best seasons came hitting #2. Bobby moved him to number 2 after batting him 5th or 6th. 2012 he was hitting behind Martin.

I think that's our best lineup, if BJ has to hit 1. Jason's approach is better suited for the top of the order, and his baserunning value is maximized if he's on in front of our better hitters.

You just never get the sense that Heyward is gonna hit one out anymore... He should have a lot more power than he does. Crazy to think that his best season was his 20 year old season where he was a monster
