GDT 7/7/21: Braves @ Pirates - No Smylys for this lineup

I don't know why but I think we could catch the Mets if we could be about five or fewer games back at the break and if we could turn this into a two team race by mid-August. Obviously, we'd have to add a piece or two (or have some people get healthy). We've proven we can compete with the teams in our division. What we've yet to prove is that we can go on a hot streak to the tune of eight out of ten or something similar. Absent that, we'll wind up about where we are now.

We are going to be nine out before the end of July if we don't make significant additions before the six-game stretch against the Rays and Padres.

Braves made up all that RD they lost on Monday and then some. Back to the 2nd best RD in the division at +16. Pythag W/L is about 44-40.

This is the nuttiest team ever. I almost expect them to sweep Miami to get over .500 for the first time this year, and have us all buzzing going into the break, only to lose like, 4 of 6 coming out of the break and have us all ready to sell again. All while keeping a decent RD.

I was amped up going into the Pirates series about sweeping (or at least winning the series) based on the momentum we created in Sunday's game with the Marlins. Every time Ive been optimistic this year, it's been unjustified. The 2021 Braves are Forrest Gump's box of chocolates in that we never know what we're going to get. Right now, the thing we haven't gotten is over .500 and it remains to be seen if we can.

This team is going to flirt with obnoxiously good games. Maybe even string together 3 wins in a row...just enough to keep hope alive. The downfall will be the all or nothing offense..and the pen and the bench. Love the wins...but I'm not fooled.

The group of Arcia, Almonte, Adrianza and Pablo makes for a pretty decent bench.

If TDA comes back and AA gets a legit hitter for LF, this offense will be good enough to compete for the division.

Agree with all of that. The bench isn’t terrible and is pretty versatile. We just need another good bat and a bullpen arm

I agree, I just don’t see us getting that big bat. Either because we can’t afford it financially, or AA doesn’t want to spend the prospect capital.

It would be the prospects I’d guess bc with us being full capacity for so long I’d think we would have some money to play with.

You’d think. But Liberty may be trying to recoup their losses from last year. Plus, the ASG fallout.

They could also potentially get some of the money back a lot more quickly if they had a team in a pennant race the last couple months of the season as opposed to one heading for a 79-83 finish. But I’ve yet to see evidence that ownership really cares about them being a successful team on the field.

Smyly has quickly turned his season around and has become a positive asset for Atlanta with 0.2 WAR (Fangraphs). Yes, that's not extraordinary but given he was worth -0.7 WAR just a month ago, it's been nice to see. Wins are relatively unimportant but he's also 7-3 after starting 2-3.

What a fun game to see in person! Felt like there were more Braves' fans there than Pirates'.
