GDT: 8/19: Braves vs San Fran - Soggy Cheerios

I think Tampa used him as an opener. If you could use Brad Hand for two innings to open up or the same for Chavez when he's back, it may.....work?

Then again, I don't want to see Chirinos again unless he's eating innings in the last week of the year after the Braves have clinched Homefield advantage throughout the entire playoffs.

I’m fine seeing him stick, though I’d probably slightly prefer Winans at this point. Smith-Shawver isn’t ready, and while Soroka may be ready to contribute, there’s a lot of value in gaining another year of team control while the club waits to be 100% certain he’s ready.

The Braves deserve that extra year after they’ve been paying dude for 3 years to not throw a pitch. I know it’s a dick move but it’s also a business.

Winans at least has the benefit of people not seeing much of him before. So even if he is likely to turn back into a pumpkin, at least there is some short term upside. Everyone is familiar with Chirinos and it isn't pretty.

These guys are all back-end or AAAA SPs. It doesn't matter which one they use because all of them are just as likely to get shelled as the others.

You don’t think Soroka is going to end up far better than back end shelling fodder ?

Elder was also back end fodder.. until he wasn't. Elder could transition into a pumkin at any moment, but that won't change what he has done for the team thus far this year. Cheerios hasn't done crap for this team other than eat a few innings.. I will gladly take another fodder any day and see if we can get another Elder for a bit.

No, I don't lump un-rusty Soroka in that category. But I was under the impression we were assuming he isn't available until mid-Sept. Perhaps I skimmed too quickly over the discussion before chiming in.

I consider guys like Winans, Chirinos, Elder, AJSS, Shuster, etc as essentially the same same thing (Elder somewhat predictably has a .355 xwOBA since July 1, and is very clearly not an "all star"). Each may have an unsustainable good streak of pitching in them (as all MLB-quality pitchers do), but none are actual MLB mainstay/impact arms. If any of them start a playoff game I would be disappointed, and the odds are pretty good at least one if them will.
